It truly is just feminine intuition

What’s the biggest telltale sign that your partner is cheating? The frustrating truth is: there’s absolutely no foolproof answer.

Perhaps he’s become colder. Perhaps he comes home smelling like a perfume that isn’t yours. Perhaps he rejects getting intimate with you. Surely, there’s something going on behind the scenes, right? But if you can’t find any concrete evidence — with no messages, phone calls, or signs of another woman — it’s easy for your suspicions to be dismissed as paranoia.

It seems like the whole nation has learnt from the whole Hougang Block ABC drama that took Singapore by storm a few months ago. Without solid evidence or a confession, you’ll be left questioning your own instincts and searching for closure that you will never be granted.

And who knows? That search for closure might just send you down a rabbit hole, as we’ve seen with the recent 100-page PDF that made its rounds on TikTok, allegedly detailing one woman’s findings about her cheating husband.

We spoke to Singaporean women who’ve been cheated on — from the obvious betrayals to the subtle signs they wish they hadn’t ignored — to share the red flags that eventually led them to the truth, along with the advice they wish they’d known sooner.

He’s being weirdly protective over his phone and passwords

Bailey, now freshly out of a two-year relationship, previously noticed that her partner had been acting super secretive and defensive over his phone. With him refusing to give her any answers, she decided to go full investigator mode and find out what was really going on herself.

When I tried to log in to his Discord, I found out he had changed his password. He would only get angry and never admit to anything whenever I confronted him, so I took matters into my own hands. I checked his phone while he was showering and saw that he had a whole dating app installed. I was right. He had been calling another girl on Discord and playing games with her the whole time.

To be honest, throughout the relationship, he never once tried to make himself better for me. I’m convinced he just didn’t like me enough. I see him buying flowers for his new girlfriend all the time, but I had to beg him to buy flowers for me. Girlies, truly, just remember: if he wanted to, he would.

Sudden changes in his schedule

Jayce found out that her boyfriend had been seeing other women for several months, even before the start of their short-lived relationship. Looking back, she believes that his excuses simply didn’t add up.

He would start cancelling plans at the last minute very often, and he’d claim he had spent ridiculous amounts of time doing something simple as an excuse. I picked up on that bullshit early because he was constantly going to the gym for three to four hours a few times a week, but the funny thing is I genuinely didn’t see any physical progress or changes in his muscles over those few months.

He told me he had to OT often too, but he’d always come and see me afterwards looking completely energised, not tired at all. That doesn’t exactly look like a man who had just spent an extra three hours slaving away at the office. I should’ve clocked that he was actually spending those extra three hours dining with his so-called colleague. Work wife alert!

He’s behaving extraordinarily cold

Kaycee’s experience shows how easily blurred boundaries can start to affect a relationship. What counts as micro-cheating differs from person to person, but problems can arise when your partner starts getting closer to someone else while putting less effort into your relationship

After he got into university, he was acting so cold to me, and it was like he didn’t even want to talk to me anymore. I later found out that he’d been eating and spending time with another girl in his school a lot, but it was hard to confront him at that time because technically, all he did was eat and spend time with her.

I don’t know if that counts as micro-cheating, but my breaking point was when my friend showed me a video of them together, and he looked ten times happier than he did with me now. That’s when I knew I had to end it.

He’s behaving extremely nicely

It’s a lose-lose situation, ladies. He can’t be acting too mean, but he can’t be acting too nice either. For 37-year-old Adele, her heart shattered when she realised that the only time he seemed to treat her right was after he had done something wrong.

A few weeks before he confessed that he had cheated on me, he was showering me with gifts and compliments. For a while, I felt like the happiest girl in the world, before I realised that something was amiss. I think it stemmed from guilt. The urge to make up for all his wrongdoings encouraged him to treat me better than he ever had before.

Men come as they are. If he’s acting weirdly or inconsistently compared to how he behaved at the start of the relationship, there’s definitely something going on

He has new habits

If he suddenly picks up new habits or phrases that seem completely out of character, it might be worth digging a little deeper. 27-year-old Jia Yi started noticing small changes in her fiancé’s behaviour, only to discover that there was a reason behind them, and it involved his new colleague.

He started using ‘purr’. And that’s so unlike him because there’s absolutely no one around him who uses that slang, and neither do I. We might be Gen Z, but that’s never been part of the way we speak or text. I’ve never even used ‘purr’ before.
- Jia Yi, 27-years-old
I took his phone, searched ‘purr’ in his Telegram chats, and there it was. A new girl. They had been talking for three months and had even gone out on three dates. My heart sank.

Is your man cheating? A word of advice

Chances are, you’re here because you’re trying to figure out whether your partner is cheating, or maybe you’re simply here for the tea. Either way, if something has been feeling off and your partner hasn’t been giving you much reassurance,; the best thing you can do is talk to them.

There’s no point jumping to conclusions or spiralling over every little sign when you can first have an honest conversation with the person you’re with. Their response might tell you more than you expect, and what you choose to do with that truth is ultimately up to you.

But remember: you deserve a relationship that gives you peace, not one that constantly leaves you questioning your worth. Sometimes, as painful as it is, being alone is better than staying with someone who keeps hurting you.
