Dating in Singapore can be a rollercoaster of emotions, from the exhilarating highs of a perfect match to the cringe-worthy lows of a terrible date. Here, we’ve gathered stories from women who’ve braved the Singaporean dating scene and lived to tell the tale.
Be warned — these dating disasters will have you shaking your head in disbelief and thanking your lucky stars for your own, perhaps, relatively normal dating experiences.
The casually racist compliment
I went on a date where everything was going great, but right at the end, the guy told me he thought Indian girls would “smell different”, but apparently I smelled fine.
My gut reaction was to say, “Actually, most Indians probably smell better than me.”
He was Indonesian Chinese, and needless to say, it was a one-off thing because I was definitely not going on another date with him.
The brother who crashed our date
We met at a club and hit it off. I gave him my number and we spent the next few days texting until he asked me out that weekend. I was so excited. I got all dolled up and was telling my friends about him beforehand.
When I got to the restaurant, I saw him standing at the entrance talking to another guy. I assumed they were friends who had bumped into each other, but it turned out to be his brother, who was joining us for the date.
Apparently, his brother really wanted to try the restaurant but had no one to go with, so my date thought I’d be okay with him tagging along since I’d mentioned that I was close to my siblings.
I am close to my siblings, but not that close. And even then, I would never bring one of them along on a date unless it was a double date.
The tale of two Kats
He asked me out on a dating app a couple of days after we matched. During the date, he kept referencing things about me that weren’t true, like what I did for work and what my hobbies were.
I kept correcting him and started wondering if he had me confused with someone else. I went to the toilet, came back and, lo and behold, found out that he had gotten me mixed up with another Kat.
Apparently, he had been talking to both of us at the same time and got us confused. To make matters worse, he then told me he felt like he had more chemistry with the other Kat.
Up until then, the date actually hadn’t been too bad, but I knew there definitely wasn’t going to be a second one.
Four exes and a whole lot of tears
It was a literal blind date set up by our friends, who thought we’d hit it off. At first, it seemed to be going pretty well. Then we started talking about our dating histories and things quickly went south.
He teared up, as in actual tears trickling down his face, while talking about every ex he’d had. There were about four different women and, according to him, every single one was “the one that got away”.
He told me all he wanted was to get married and start a family, then proceeded to ask if I was going to break his heart too. He said that if I was, I shouldn’t even bother dating him.
At that point, I really wanted to say yes and hightail it out of there. But out of respect for the friend who set us up, I stayed and finished the date.
Hot date, hoarder bedroom
The conversation was going well and we were vibing so much that we decided to go back to his place to have a little fun.
We were making out on his sofa and things were getting pretty hot and heavy when I suggested moving to his bedroom. He didn’t want to. He kept insisting that we could just do everything in the living room instead, which I thought was weird.
After some convincing, he finally relented. The moment we walked into his room, I understood exactly why he’d wanted to stay outside.
His bedroom looked like a hoarder’s dream after a tornado had ripped through it. Needless to say, I left unsatisfied.
Surprisingly, there was a second date. He even called a cleaner to clean his home beforehand, but his room still had way too much stuff in it for me to feel comfortable.
