With so many new cafes and restaurants constantly opening their doors, we’re always spoilt for choice on where to head to for a team lunch or family dinner. But did you know about these new spots for healthy meals?
What is clean eating, and what should I look out for when dining out?
Clean eating is a flexible approach to food that focuses on consuming whole, minimally processed ingredients. That means choosing meals made from fresh vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats—while avoiding overly processed foods, refined sugars, artificial additives, and deep-fried items.
When dining out, look for restaurants that:
- Prioritise fresh, seasonal ingredients
- Offer grilled, baked or steamed options instead of fried
- Make their own sauces and dressings in-house (to avoid hidden sugars and additives)
- Highlight plant-based or whole food menu sections
- Allow customisations so you can skip heavy sauces or swap sides for salads or grains
Words like “farm-to-table”, “organic”, “sustainably sourced”, or “whole foods” on the menu or restaurant description are usually good indicators. Clean eating isn’t about restriction — it’s about choosing food that’s as close to its natural state as possible, which can be both nutritious and delicious.
