PDRN skincare: what it is, benefits and the best products to try
From salmon-derived PDRN to newer plant-based alternatives, the regenerative ingredient is making its way from in-clinic treatments into skincare and haircare. Here’s what it does and the products to know
By Hayden Ng -
When polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) was first introduced as a skincare ingredient, it was mainly extracted from salmon sperm. Despite its peculiar origin, beauty devotees eagerly embraced PDRN and started using it on their faces for its remarkable ability to accelerate skin healing and restore elasticity.
Sharing striking similarities with human DNA, PDRN has a high compatibility with our own skin. “Think of it as a DNA repair and building block that allows your cells to regenerate and recover faster,” says Dr Teo Wan Lin, chief scientific officer of Dr.TWL Asian Skin Research Institute.
First used in in-clinic treatments such as skin booster injections, this revered ingredient has now made its way into skincare formulations and even haircare. As it turns out, PDRN can effectively promote hair regrowth and stabilise hair loss conditions such as androgenetic alopecia, according to Dr Teo.
Its source of extraction is also no longer restricted to animal sources, as PDRN is increasingly being harvested from botanical alternatives. Dr Teo points to panax ginseng-derived PDRN which can serve as a cruelty-free option for conscious consumers. “It does require specialised equipment and technology, and based on studies, the effects are equivalent,” she adds.
What is PDRN skincare and how does it work for skin regeneration?
When it comes to efficacy, Dr Teo shares that molecular size matters. She explains that in order for beauty ingredients to work at a deeper cellular level, their molecules must be under 500 daltons. Raw PDRN simply sits on the skin surface, while processed PDRN can become smaller fragments and be better absorbed by the skin.
Although PDRN is known to be generally stable and non-irritating, thoughtful pairing is still essential. Dr Teo warns against using it with certain products such as acid peels which “can destabilise the molecule or alter its function.”
Torn between choosing marine or plant-based PDRN products? Don’t worry, the decision ultimately hinges on personal preference. Dr Teo notes that even though the standard research data typically references marine PDRN, expanding research shows that plant-derived options can be a viable alternative.

Dior Capture PDRN-Shot, $146
As we age, our skin cells weaken, leading to the loss of skin radiance and elasticity. Dior Capture PDRN-Shot is a needle-free intensive solution that’s inspired by PDRN injections. The rice-derived PDRN here boasts four times more skin-awakening power than traditional salmon PDRN to minimise signs of ageing.
Aromatica Rosemary PDRN Scalp Serum, $41
Scalp care is as important as skincare, especially given how closely connected the scalp is to the face. With the help of rosemary, PDRN and vegan spicules that act as microneedles, this leave-on serum toughens the roots and breathes new life into worn out scalps.
Litology PDRN Hydrating Essence Toner, $36.90
With its patented 3D-PDRN technology, this toner combines three varying DNA molecular weights together to target the different skin layers. It also features astaxanthin microcapsules, peptides and purslane extract to shield the skin against oxidative damage and assist in skin barrier recovery.
Innisfree Green Tea PDRN Bounce Booster Eye & Lip Serum, $27
Compared to the rest of our face, the areas around our eyes and lips are quick to reflect signs of ageing because of the thinner skin surface and lesser oil glands. Thankfully, this double duty serum delivers a rejuvenating concoction of green tea PDRN, peptides and retinol to lessen fine lines and wrinkles.
