Finding the perfect manicure that ensures a smooth transition from day to night can be a challenge. There’s the basic manicure, which looks forever failsafe, but frankly, lacks personality. Nail art – think intricately hand-painted custom designs – spotlights your playful side but can come across as unprofessional in boardrooms.

Enter the trendy cat-eye manicure. Well-loved by Chinese netizens for its versatility, the cat-eye manicure has evolved from soft, moonstone-inspired neutral tones to bolder, light-catching hues such as silver, purple and bronze.

Several steps are involved in this distinct manicure. According to Wanxin Belle, founder of Glitzy Fingers, the process begins with nail preparation, during which the manicurist shapes and buffs the nails to create a smooth base. This step is followed by a base coat and a cured base colour, such as black, to enhance the overall effect.

A layer of magnetic gel polish is then applied to the nails, and the technician holds a magnet near them. Christer Kang, founder of Qquirky Nails, explains that the magnet is moved around the nail to “wake the magnetic pigments” and arrange them into the desired design. Finally, the nails are cured under an LED lamp before a top coat is applied.

What makes the cat-eye manicure so universally flattering

The good news: both experts agree that the cat-eye manicure is universally flattering, and is suitable for different nail lengths, shapes, skin tones, and lifestyles. For example, longer nails will allow for a more light-reflective effect, and almond-shaped nails can result in a more elegant look.

Before booking your cat-eye manicure appointment, Wanxin recommends asking your salon whether its nail artists have experience with magnetic gel techniques and if they have past work photos for reference.

Be sure also to enquire if the manicurist offers customisation to suit your personal preferences, style and nail shape. She adds: “A clear communication upfront will help manage expectations and ensure satisfaction with the final look.”
