Sure, you can always pull your hair back into a regular ponytail or bun with an elastic band, but why not add some fun to your everyday hairstyle with an oversized scrunchie or a glitzy hair chain? An expertly-placed accessory can also go a long way in disguising unruly and unwashed hair. Here, we share seven unexpected ways to wear these adornments.

SHINY LITTLE THINGS

More is more: Put your hair up in a tousled bun before topping it off with metal barrettes of different colours, shapes and sizes.

SWEET MAGNOLIA

A satin headband is a great, fuss-free way to upgrade a simple five-minute hairstyle. You can wear it with your hair down or dress up a messy ponytail. Add visual interest with super-short, faux baby bangs (yes, you don’t need an actual fringe to pull this off). It’s surprisingly easy to make your fake bangs look real – simply gather a section of hair in your crown area into a high ponytail and lay it on your forehead. Secure with hair pins and twist the rest of your hair into an updo. Finally, run a flat iron through to neaten your strands.

ALL TIED UP

Embrace two of the biggest trends – Y2K hairstyles and hair ribbons – with bubble braids. To recreate, pull your hair into a low pony before using a thin ribbon to create a bubble braid. Gently tug at your braid for added volume and maximum impact.

Elevate your plait with a playful splash of colour. Start with a side pony and wrap your scarf around it. Next, with the two ends of the scarf, braid it together with the rest of your hair and fasten it with an elastic hair tie.

CLOUD NINE

Scrunchies are a perennial favourite. This season’s iteration is bigger and more voluminous than before. You can style it in multiple ways, depending on where it is placed. Team it up with a twisted ponytail to make a head-turning statement.

PLAYING WITH HARDWARE

6/8

You can always use a hair accessory for this look. Alternatively, you can repurpose an old necklace or earring as a clip or hair chain. Pro tip: Prep your strands with a small amount of pomade or texturising spray to add grit so you can easily coil the chain around your hair.

SERVING LOOKS

While you can’t go wrong with a sleek chignon, there are new ways to reinvent this tried-and-true 'do. Add an architectural twist to the hairstyle with an experimental art-forward bun: Create two ponytails and roll them up in the shape of a tube, and clean up any loose strands with bobby pins and copious amounts of hairspray. While this hairstyle is striking on its own, it's the perfect canvas for a show-stopping accessory like a metal chopstick.
