There has been an increase in demand for facial procedures globally and recent data shows Singapore reflects this trend closely. According to the ISAPS Global Survey 2024, nearly 38 million aesthetic procedures were performed worldwide last year, marking a 40 per cent increase from 2020. Released at the ISAPS Olympiad World Congress, held in Singapore for the first time last month, the report reveals a major shift: facial enhancements are now outpacing body-focused procedures around the world.

In fact, eyelid surgery has overtaken liposuction as the most commonly performed surgical procedure globally, reflecting a growing preference for facial refinement over full-body transformation. And Singapore mirrors this trend almost exactly with eyelid surgery accounting for 20.5 per cent of surgical procedures conducted, followed closely by scar revision (9.5 per cent), liposuction (9.3 per cent), breast augmentation (7.5 per cent) and fat grafting of the face (7.3 per cent).

We break down the most telling statistics and what they say about Singapore’s relationship with beauty.

Eyelids are the windows to the soul

Singapore recorded 3,185 eyelid surgeries in the past year, making it the country’s most popular surgical aesthetic procedure, matching the global trend. As the top surgical procedure worldwide with 2.1 million cases (up 13.4% from the year before), eyelid enhancements appear to be a universal touchpoint.

Tweakments era

Globally, non-surgical treatments like Botulinum toxin (Botox) and hyaluronic acid fillers remain top of the charts and Singapore follows suit. Locally, 4,718 Botox procedures and 3,514 filler treatments were performed, together accounting for over 80% of non-surgical procedures.

The scars we carry

Scar revision was the fourth most common surgical procedure globally last year, and in Singapore, it takes the second spot after eyelid surgery, with 1,470 cases.

The fat grafting effect

Fat grafting to the face saw a 19.2% increase globally, and Singapore clocked 1,134 procedures in this category, surpassing rhinoplasty, lip enhancement, and neck lifts.

A technique where fat is harvested from one part of the body (usually the thighs or abdomen) and injected into the face, fat grafting promises to restore lost volume and smooth contours using the patient’s own tissue.

Body procedures dip, but liposuction holds strong

While there is an overall 14.8% decline in global body and extremities procedures, liposuction remains a popular procedure both worldwide and in Singapore. Here, 1,442 lipo procedures were carried out, placing it among the top five most-performed surgeries.
