Heartwarming, funny and sweet! The best proposal stories from Her World Brides
When their man went down on one knee.
By Cassandra Koh -
Under the winter night sky of Seoul at an outdoor ice-skating, Jon went down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend, Shi Pei, in a scene right out of a romantic K-drama.
How did your love story start?
We met through a mutual friend at an ex-colleague's baby shower.
A few of us shared the cost for a present and through the course of trying to split the payment, some playful banter was exchanged and she ended up owing me a cup of Teh Tarik.
We started meeting each other for a cup of Teh Tarik, but neither of us had the intention of settling that debt, which led to even more dates.
Until this day, she still owes me that cup of Teh Tarik, but I'm indebted to that cup of Teh Tarik forever, for allowing me to find the love of my life. – Jon
How was the proposal like?
On the night of the proposal, Jon insisted on bringing me to a night spot he said was highly recommended by travel blogs.
It was situated atop a hill, and getting there wasn’t easy. It turned out to be the outdoor ice-skating rink at Grand Hyatt Hotel, and because it was such a cold night, there were just a handful of people there.
I was a little surprised that he brought me there as I didn’t have a clue as to how to skate.
After some assurance on Jon’s part, we got into the rink and I was filming him on my phone when, from outside the rink, someone passed him a bouquet of roses and he smoothly glided up to me with them.
When I realised what was happening, my tears started welling up!
Jon handed me the bouquet and gave me a hug before sharing with me how the last three years we’ve spent together has been, and how excited he is to be sharing our future together.
At the end of it, he went down on one knee and took out the ring from his coat.
It was the most surreal and amazing moment of my life.
I said yes, of course, and I can’t wait to embark on our next adventure of a life together! – Shi Pei

Jun Jie whisked Charmaine on a surprise trip to Sweden for her birthday, and proceeded to surprise her even more with a heart-melting forest proposal.
How did your love story start?
We were classmates in secondary school and we have known each other since we were 13.
Since then, we have been the best of friends and each other’s confidante – through ups and downs and other failed relationships.
We started dating only during our university days and it has been nine years since we took the plunge from best friends to lovers.
How was the proposal like?
Jun Jie has taken me on many adventures and we find every opportunity possible to travel and see the world.
Our most recent adventure was most unexpected for me.
It was my birthday weekend and I had expected it to be a simple celebration with my loved ones.
Instead, a few days prior to my birthday, I found myself sitting in the middle of Stockholm, questioning how I could have been so blessed to have found a soulmate in this lifetime.
Jun Jie had whisked me away in the middle of a work day from my office – with a vegetable bouquet no less, and the question, “Will you travel with me?”
With only an hour to pack and work left undone, I found my dazed self on a flight to Sweden!
It was a trip long in the making, with Jun Jie enlisting the help of so many wonderful friends and my mum.
Finally, on my birthday, while we were hiking through the most enchanting Swedish forest, Jun Jie got down on one knee and my answer was most definitely, yes.

Among the stunning bamboo grove of Arashiyama, Kyoto, Elliot surprised Amanda with a well-thought out proposal and had the sweet moment captured on camera!
How did your love story start?
Elliot and I were classmates in polytechnic but only started hanging out after we found ourselves both in Hong Kong for our overseas internship.
During those three months, we started meeting regularly after work (for Froyo!) and that’s when we got closer.
We got together during Elliot’s birthday after I surprised him with an improvised version of “birthday noodles”. And I guess this is what prompted him to surprise me with a proposal overseas as well!
How was the proposal like?
My proposal story is nothing grand or epic, but it is close to my heart.
We were on our two weeks trip in Japan, and after two failed attempts on the trip, Elliot finally managed to ask for my hand in Kyoto.
On the pretext of wanting to take pictures at the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Elliot had us waking up at 6 a.m as there will be no crowds in the morning.
I remember feeling cranky and groggy on the way there as I’m not a morning person. It also didn’t help that the weather was cold and drizzly.
When we got there, Elliot set up his tripod for us to take a picture together - in actual fact, it was recording everything down in video.
We were also vlogging during the trip, and right before he proposed, he handed me his phone and I basically filmed the moment he went down on his knees and took the ring out.
Although I saw the proposal coming, I was still speechless when it actually happened.
I started crying while a pair of tourist walked by and I was embarrassed yet happy in the rain. - Amanda
Matthew surprised Christine during their mission trip in Cambodia with a proposal under the guise of an English lesson!
How did your love story start?
Matthew and I first met five years ago on a mission trip to Pailin, Cambodia, and got together a year after.
Since then, we’ve gone back together three times to the same village – to teach English to the village children, and help out in the construction of the hostel for future volunteers to stay in.
Over time, the place has come to be a second home to us – a home that’s away from our busy lives in Singapore.
How was the proposal like?
During our most recent mission trip to Pailin, Matthew, together with our friends, planned a ‘secret mission’ aka the proposal, by way of a mock directional English lesson.
I was blind-folded and directed in English the way to walk and was eventually led to a heart lit by light sticks.
He had also prepared a video, and thereafter went down on one knee. I said yes!
It was something the villagers experienced for the first time as such a proposal was not part of their culture.
The religious brothers we have been working with also gave us a prayer of blessings after the whole surprise.

After failed attempts at two other locations, it was the balcony of their Kyoto ryokan overlooking the Japanese gardens where Youqian managed to pop the question to Alicia!
How did your love story start?
We met in university, and I would chase Youqian down the halls shouting his name because I thought he had such a funny name.
It was also the first time I could remember someone’s Chinese name on the first try – mainly because it was so funny. We became friends and started dating a year later.
How was the proposal like?
Youqian proposed to me while we were in Japan and it seemed like he planned this for many months leading up to the trip.
Most of my friends knew about it and had already seen the ring but I was completely clueless.
Before we even went on the trip, I got nagged by my girlfriends to get my nails done and pack "pretty" clothes.
I had an inkling that he might propose but it was only a fleeting thought and I quickly brushed it aside and didn't think much of it.
Fast forward to our trip and there were many failed attempts that I actually did not know about.
Youqian usually carries around a big backpack that holds his camera and multiple lenses, and apparently he kept the box hidden in a back compartment throughout the trip.
This meant that he was carrying the ring around for the entire duration of the trip just waiting for the right moment. At some point, I helped to carry his bag around.
He later told me that he laughed at the thought of me carrying around my own ring without knowing it.
The first attempt was at Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto.
We were hiking up the trail and there was a moment when the crowd dissipated and we took a rest on some logs.
Just when he was about to do it, he got really nervous and his hands started to shake.
He had his camera in one hand with a jacket hung around his arm while he was trying to pry the box out of the secret compartment of his bag.
So there he was sweating it out, when I apparently turned to him and said "Oi, what you doing? Hurry up lah, let's go!" and he realised the moment as over.
The second failed attempt was at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios.
I'm a massive Harry Potter fan, and he thought he might do it there because I was so happy, and running around like a crazy person all day that this would be a nice way to end the day.
But he couldn't find a moment when we were alone as there were too many tourists.
The third and final attempt was at our ryokan in Kyoto.
When we checked in, there was an option for a room upgrade. For some reason, my usually frugal boyfriend jumped at the chance to pay a little extra for a fancier room, one with a balcony overlooking a garden.
We finally settled in, and when we were checking out the view on the balcony, Youqian decided to pop the question.
He hugged me and starting shivering from the nerves – which I mistook it as him just being cold, and then he started on his speech.
It was a really weird feeling because we've been together for so long and we never speak formally to each other.
Before I knew it, he was kneeling down in front of me.
Most of it was a blur, but I do remember him proposing with a haiku (a form of Japanese poetry)!
A couple of moments passed with me asking him to stop it while jumping around and him yelling at me to shut up and stand still so he could finish.
And then I said YES and that was it.

Going back to Sentosa where they had their first date 10 years ago, Ming Jun surprised Yee Ching with a beautiful and heart-warming proposal with their close friends in attendance.
How did your love story start?
Ming Jun and I were from the same primary school but we only became classmates and friends in secondary school.
In secondary three, I confessed my feelings to him via instant messanging and we’ve been together since!
How was the proposal like?
After dating for close to 10 years, Ming Jun finally popped the questions.
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting the proposal to be such a fun-filled and touching one.
Our close friends were there to witness the occasion, and for those who weren’t able to make it, their well-wishes were recorded in a video Ming Jun put together.
On the day of the proposal, I was tricked by my girlfriends into thinking that we were going for a staycation in Sentosa.
When we got there, the first part of the surprise was a video montage of the pictures we’ve taken during our dating days.
I was then blindfolded and guided to another room which had been decorated with balloons, candles and fairylights. I was also surrounded by candles in the shape of a heart on the floor.
Ming Jun made his grand entrance and went down on one knee.
I was so nervous that I mistakenly gave him my right hand instead of my left!
I would never forget that fluttery, joyous feeling in my gut when he placed the ring on my finger.
Ming Jun shared with me later that he was so relieved when I nodded my head.
He chose to propose at Amara Sanctury Resort as Sentosa holds a special meaning to the both of us as Sentosa was where we had spent our first date, strolling along the beach after a dinner at VivoCity.
Just as excited as I was to be his girlfriend at 15, I am now also excited to spend the rest of my life with him, my better half.
While enjoying their trip in Maldives, Cheow Beng surprised Sharon with a simple and intimate proposal by the jacuzzi of their private villa.
How did your love story start?
We met online via OkCupid. Cheow Beng’s profile caught my attention as he had listed FT Island, a Korean band, as one of his favourite artist and I am a fan of everything Korean.
From the moment we connected, conversation flowed easily between us.
During our second month together, Cheow Beng sweetly compiled our conversations together into a booklet, and told me that whenever I get angry or frustrated at him, I can take the booklet out and read to remember how we started out.
How was the proposal like?
The proposal was a simple and intimate affair, between the two of us, and was characteristic of my fiancé as is someone who doesn’t like to be in the limelight.
It happened during our trip to Maldives last November, and which is a place we always wanted to visit.
The possibility of the proposal happening during the trip did cross my mind as we have been discussing about our wedding plans for a while.
My best friend told me to look out for any unusual signs, such as constantly checking his belongings etc.
During the second day there, while we were spending time in the Jacuzzi of our villa, he asked me again on my preference for the diamond cut. I jokingly questioned when he was planning to get the ring.
He suddenly excused himself – I was expecting him to come back with a wine opener; but instead, he returned with the ring and went down on one knee to propose.
It was unexpected as we were both in swim wear! Thankfully, he didn’t propose in our sleep wear, haha. And so our proposal took place in our villa, right next to the Jacuzzi tub. Maldives is even more special to us now.

Jack proposed to Sim Yee in the midst of laughter due to an unexpected situation during their romantic stay at Lexis Hibiscus at Port Dickson.
How did your love story start?
Jack and I met in 2015. I was in Malaysia then, while Jack is from Hong Kong.
We met through his best friend, Sunny – who had opened a café in Malaysia with his wife.
I was a regular there and one day, while I was at the café, Sunny passed me the phone with Jack on the line and that is how we first knew of each other.
After having spoken over the phone for a few months, Jack decided to pay me a visit in Singapore and we both fell in love at first sight.
We went through two years of a long-distance relationship before Jack proposed to me last year.
How was the proposal like?
Our proposal took place at Lexis Hibiscus in Port Dickson, during one of Jack’s visit to meet me as we were still doing long-distance.
We had plans to enjoy the small private pool in our room after dinner that night, and Jack had planned to propose to me then.
However, I was having a stomach-ache and told him to go ahead without me first while I visited the toilet.
What happened next was hilarious. When I came out of the toilet, I saw Jack rushing towards me from the bedroom, and because he wasn’t expecting me to be done so soon, I caught him in the midst of preparing our proposal!
He had managed to change to a formal shirt but was still in his shorts. Also, the camera had not been set up.
In his rush, Jack knelt down by the toilet area and said, “Please marry me!” instead of “Would you marry me?”
Before I could react, a certain smell wafted in from the toilet behind us and the situation got so awkward. I could tell Jack was trying not to breathe.
Both of us ran to the bedroom and started laughing over the unexpected situation. Of course, Jack still managed to wear the ring on for me after.
Our only regret was that there was no photo or video to capture the moment of our proposal due to Jack being caught off-guard.
It is still a precious memory to the both of us however, and to me, being married to someone you love is what matters most.
