Unfold your range: Why trying to fit into one label is holding you back

Quick question: if someone asked you to describe yourself in one word, could you actually do it? Probably not. And honestly — why should you have to?

That’s the exact question Samsung set out to explore with Unfold Your Range, a campaign that gives us a glimpse into the world of talented multi-hyphenates. Amongst them: April Kim, an interpreter, emcee and marathoner; and Gladys Lam, a race car driver, entrepreneur and content creator who also runs a hamster rescue. 

Ahead of Samsung’s newest foldable line-up — the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8 — we sat down with both of them to find out what “range” really means when you stop trying to fit into one job title.

April Kim: The interpreter who never planned to be one

If you’ve been to a K-pop concert or fan meet in Singapore, there’s a good chance you’ve seen April Kim on stage — she’s one of the country’s most recognisable Korean-English interpreters, hosts and emcees for Korean celebrities and concerts. To Gladys, none of these are separate “jobs” competing for her attention — they’re all teaching her something that carries into the next. She lets on that racing sharpens her problem-solving skills under pressure, animal rescue builds her empathy, entrepreneurship demands discipline, and content creation hones her storytelling. 

Every facet feeds the others. And with a life split across a racetrack, a rescue shelter, a business and a camera lens, her phone isn’t just a device — it’s the one thing holding all of it together.
