By Letty Seah -
The 2026 Milan‑Cortina Winter Olympics brought together nearly 3,000 athletes across 16 disciplines, from alpine skiing to snowboarding and figure skating. Among them were standout competitors of Asian descent, including figure skater Alysa Liu, freestyle skiing star Eileen Gu, and snowboard champion Chloe Kim. From podium finishes to record-breaking performances, these athletes made their mark across multiple disciplines. Read on to find out more about the Asian athletes who are making history—both on the slopes and beyond.
Eileen Gu, 22, @eileengu
Eileen Gu might just be a real-life Barbie—and we’re not arguing. At 22, the American-born freestyle skier has already cemented herself as one of the sport’s all-time greats, earning three golds and three silvers across two Winter Olympics—the most of any freestyle skier. Off the slopes, she’s a Stanford student, an IMG-signed model, and a multimillionaire with a reported net worth of around $20 million, thanks to high-profile endorsement deals. Mum on her dating life, Eileen has been linked to French swimmer Leon Marchand in 2024 and crypto billionaire Justin Sun earlier this year, though she hasn’t publicly confirmed any relationship.
Alysa Liu, 20, @alysaxliu
Even if you haven’t been following the Winter Olympics, you might have caught newly minted gold medallist Alysa Liu’s closing gala routine set to “Stateside” by British artist PinkPantheress and Swedish singer Zara Larsson.
The Team USA figure skater—who was born via surrogacy, along with her four younger siblings, and raised by her single father Arthur Liu—showed prodigious talent from the age of five. By 13, she had already made history as the youngest U.S. figure skating champion and the first American woman to land three triple axels in a single programme.
As for her personal life, Alysa has kept things largely private. However, eagle-eyed fans recently spotted her with hyperpop musician glaive (Ash Blue Gutiérrez) when she arrived in Oakland from Milan, sparking speculation that the two may be dating—though she has not confirmed any relationship.
Chloe Kim, 25, @chloekim
American snowboarder Chloe Kim remains one of the most celebrated athletes in Winter Olympics history. She made history as the first woman to win back-to-back gold medals in the snowboard halfpipe at Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022. At the recent Milan-Cortina Games, she added a silver medal to her tally, bringing her Olympic haul to three medals.
Off the slopes, Chloe has been just as busy—making appearances at Milan Fashion Week following the Games and cementing her status as a style star. And when it comes to her personal life? Lucky in sport, lucky in love. She has been dating Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett since November 2025.
Goan Choi, 17, @gaon.sb
Goan is no stranger to making history. As a young teen, she clinched gold in the halfpipe at the 2022 FIS Snowboarding Junior World Championships. The following year, she added to her growing list of accolades with another gold at the Winter X Games XXVII.
At just 17, she cemented her status as one of snowboarding’s brightest young stars, becoming the first South Korean woman to win an Olympic snowboarding medal when she struck gold on the podium.
Mitsuki Ono, 22, @mitsukiono
Turning 22 on March 5, Mitsuki Ono has long been a force on the international snowboarding scene. She made her world championship debut at the 2018 FIS Snowboarding World Championships and clinched gold in the halfpipe event. Representing Team Japan on the Olympic stage, she later secured a bronze medal in the halfpipe with an impressive score of 85.00, further cementing her reputation as one of the sport’s standout talents. It is not publicly known whether Mitsuki is in a relationship.
Ami Nakai, 17
Although it was her Olympic debut, 17-year-old Ami Nakai was calm and self-assured, landing a triple axel to clinch the bronze medal. This is just one of her many impressive achievements: she is the 2026 Four Continents silver medalist, 2025–26 Grand Prix Final silver medalist, 2025 Grand Prix de France champion, and 2025 Skate Canada bronze medalist. Ami keeps her personal life private, focusing on her sport and growth.
Kaori Sakamoto, 25
A lady of many firsts, Kyoto-born Kaori Sakamoto made history as the first Japanese woman to win a world title since Mao Asada in 2014—and went on to become the first Japanese skater in any discipline to claim three consecutive World Championship titles.
She made her Olympic debut at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, finishing sixth in the women’s singles event. Four years later in Beijing, she returned stronger than ever, earning a silver medal for Team Japan in the team event and a bronze in women’s singles. At the most recent Games, she dominated both the short and free programmes, posting one of the season’s top free skate scores with 148.62 points.
Though she’s very much Gen Z, Kaori keeps a relatively low profile and does not appear to have a public social media presence.
Faiz Basha, 24, @faizthegatebasher
We can’t talk about Asian baddies without spotlighting Singapore’s sole representative at the Winter Olympics 2026, Faiz Basha. The 24-year-old spent much of his childhood in Switzerland, where his parents were posted as diplomats—an experience that first introduced him to skiing through his school curriculum.
Now a mechanical engineering student at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, Faiz rose to the occasion on the Olympic stage. Battling tricky conditions in the opening run of the men’s slalom at the Stelvio Ski Centre in Bormio, Italy, he powered through to finish 35th overall on Feb 16—a commendable feat for the tropical alpine skier.
