Why everyone is talking about Kim Yeji, the South Korean Olympic pistol shooter

The Olympics is officially back in season and like the other years, we often find ourselves gravitating towards the most attractive athletes who grab our attention. But beyond their looks (of course), it’s their incredible sporting prowess that definitely deserves the spotlight as well. Over the weekend, one athlete who truly stood out was Kim Yeji, the South Korean pistol shooter. 

In case you haven’t seen her on your Explore or For You Page, the athlete set the internet abuzz when she graced our screens during the Women’s 10-Meter Air Pistol Finals on Sunday where she finished behind her teammate and roommate Ye Jin Oh, who won gold.

Many took notice of her sleek and chic uniform, of which she sported a simple FIla tracksuit and a cap from The North Face – both branded with the South Korean flag on the sides. 

Her monochromatic outfit is reminiscent of the “health goth” style that was all the rage in the mid-2010s. For the unacquainted, the trend is a blend of sporty athleisure with a darker, music-inspired edge. 

However, aside from her outfit, online users have been raving about Kim Yeji’s sci-fi shooter glasses and ice-cold stance – leaving them completely swooning over her. Some have made comments online stating that she looks like a character from ‘Valorant’ – a free-to-play first-person tactical hero shooter game, while others have compared her to a robo-assassin from an action film. In fact, X users like Del Walker(@TheCartelDel) have commented, “This is the most ‘Main Character Energy’ I’ve ever seen in my life.”

And while many are zooming into her bad*** demeanour and unbothered vibe, the athlete was also seen sporting an endearing detail that some might have noticed. Yes, we’re talking about the small elephant plushie hanging from her waist. 

Why was she carrying it during her rounds? Well, for those who didn’t know, this toy belongs to Kim Yeji’s five-year-old daughter and is kept close as a good-luck charm. How adorable! 

Users have also left comments saying, “The fact that she’s a mom makes it even more dope”.
