As the Star Awards returns to its iconic home at The Theatre at Mediacorp for its 30th anniversary, there’s an unmistakable sense of nostalgia and excitement in the air. For many of the stars walking the red carpet this year, it’s more than just another awards show—it’s a full-circle moment.

“I think it’s an honour, and kind of a happy moment for me,” says veteran actor Pierre Png, reflecting on the milestone year. “There are so many other platforms now, and people are still watching TV. So I’m really glad to be involved.”

For rising star Chantalle Ng, this year’s ceremony holds personal significance. “I grew up in the industry… ever since I was a kid, I would always be glued to the TV for the ceremony,” she shares. “Sometimes, when I had the chance, I’d follow my mother to the Star Awards ceremony live. And now, to be nominated and be part of it—it’s just out of this world.”

Felicia Chin, who’s now a seasoned face on the scene, recalls the wide-eyed awe of her younger self: “I don’t remember the specifics, but I do remember sitting in the midst of the audience and thinking, ‘Wow… Lee Nanxing!’” She laughs, adding, “That was me at 18. So understandably so.”

For Pierre, one Star Awards moment will forever be etched in memory. “It was the year I won Best Actor,” he shares. “I was actually a supporting character, but somehow I got bumped up into the Best Actor category… and I won. That one will always stay in my head.”

A full-circle moment for some

Before the glam and the glory, most of these stars started out like the rest of us—rooting for their faves from the couch, frantically calling in to vote, and dreaming of one day seeing themselves on that stage.

“I remember picking up the house phone and calling in to vote for Jeanette Aw, that was a really fun memory.”
- Tasha Low

For Chantalle, the Star Awards was something deeply personal. “I always rooted for my mother, and I always wished that she would go on stage. There was one very special year where she won Best Supporting Actress—I was so happy, I ran towards her after she got her award.” She adds that winning her own “Best Newcomer” award a few years later was a defining moment. “It gave me the confidence that maybe I could really give this industry a shot.”

And for Tyler, one pandemic-era ceremony stands out. “It was the first Star Awards I attended, and it was held at Changi Airport during COVID. We had to sit separately, and Jewel was used as a venue. It was such an interesting concept.”

Their Star Awards 2025 predictions

As much as it’s a celebration of the past, the Star Awards is also a platform to spotlight rising talent and fresh favourites. This year, there’s a lot of love for the new generation—especially in the hotly contested “Best Rising Star” and “Most Popular Artiste” categories.

“I’d cast my vote for Tyler,” says Chantalle. “He’s very outstanding, very cute, and I really enjoyed his performance in Emerald Hill.” Pierre agrees with a cheeky grin: “Two of my favourite rising actors are in it, but I think I’d choose Tyler because I strive and aim to have a body like his. Maybe he’ll share some secrets with me.”

Tasha, too, is on Team Tyler. “I’ve worked with him on a few projects, and I think he has a lot of potential. People love him.”

But who has Tyler cast his vote for? Well, Tyler himself keeps it humble. “I want everyone to win… but if I had to pick someone other than me, I’d choose Herman. We started out together, and I’ve seen him grow a lot. He really matured.”

Herman Keh, who’s also part of the Star Awards, is a rising actor and host in the industry has made a name for himself, coming in second place in Star Search 2019 and for his roles in multiple television series like I Want To Be A Towkay, Mind Jumper and Healing Heroes. More recently, for those who’ve been in the loop, you’d also know that he starred in the hit series, Emerald Hill, alongside Tasha, Tyler and Chantalle.

In the Most Popular Artiste category, Pierre is hoping for a win of his own. “I don’t know who’s nominated, but I definitely hope I get to win.” Tyler is rooting for him too: “I hope Pierre wins it this year. He didn’t get it last year, so please vote for him.”

Elsewhere, Felicia is championing Chantalle and long-time nominees like Romeo Tan. “Those in their ninth year in the running—I hope they get their tenth award.”

The dramas to watch (and win)

With fan-favourite series like Kill Sera Sera, Unforgivable, and Born to Shine in the mix, the Best Drama category is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in years.

“I’d say Kill Sera Sera, because I am Sera,”
- Chantalle Ng

Pierre is keeping it honest: “It has to be Unforgivable (不可饶恕的罪恶)—because I’m in it!”

Tasha, on the other hand, has a softer pick: Once Upon A New Year’s Eve, starring Qi Yuwu and Jesseca Liu. “I really enjoyed the show, so I hope it wins.”

Felicia is torn between a few standouts. “My gut says Born to Shine or Kill Sera Sera. But the black horse might be Unforgivable, since it was nominated for so many awards.”

From heartfelt throwbacks to hopeful predictions, one thing is clear—whether they’re seasoned veterans or new to the scene, this year’s nominees are embracing the spirit of the Star Awards with pride, passion, and a deep sense of gratitude.

The 30th Star Awards ceremony will be happening on July 6.
