On what would have been her 49th birthday, we remember the star who brought Shan Cai to life

Everyone remembers the moment the news broke: Taiwanese star Barbie Hsu had passed away. To millions, she was “Big S” — the vivacious singer-turned-actress who rose from a pop duo with her sister to become the unforgettable face of Asian idol dramas. But during Lunar New Year in Japan last year, her bright light dimmed too soon, as she quietly succumbed to pneumonia brought on by influenza. She was only 48.
On what would have been her 49th birthday, we take a walk down memory lane to celebrate Barbie’s personal milestones and career highlights.
A star is born
Barbie Hsu was born on 6 October 1976 in Taipei. From a young age, she and her younger sister Dee stepped into the glitzy entertainment world as the pop duo ASOS. Their quick wit and natural stage presence soon earned them hosting gigs on some of the era’s most popular variety shows, including Guess and 100% Entertainment.
A true triple threat, Barbie didn’t stop there. In 2001, she made her mark as an actress to be reckoned with, captivating audiences as Dong Shancai in the television adaptation of the Japanese manga series Meteor Garden — a role that would define her career and win her legions of fans across Asia.
With the success of Meteor Garden, Barbie went on to star in shows such as Corner with Love and Summer’s Desire.
A loving mother and wife
In 2010, Barbie Hsu married Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei, though the marriage ended in a high-profile divorce a decade later, in 2021. She welcomed her daughter, Wang Xiyue, in 2013. Her second pregnancy, with her son Wang Hsi Lin, was notably challenging; during labour, the pain from contractions reportedly triggered her epilepsy, and she collapsed. Thankfully, her son was delivered safely in 2016. Two years later, Barbie was expecting a third child, but on her doctor’s advice, she had to terminate the pregnancy after it was discovered that the unborn foetus had no heartbeat.
After her divorce, Barbie found love again. In 2022, she reconnected with South Korean DJ Koo, and the pair eventually married. Since her passing, her husband has been seen visiting her grave regularly, with reports suggesting he is even considering real estate near Jinbo Mountain, where Barbie was laid to rest.
Our Forever Shan Cai (6 October 1976 – 2 February 2025)
Barbie’s passing was sudden and deeply mourned. While in Japan on a family holiday during the festive season, she developed pneumonia triggered by influenza, from which she ultimately succumbed. Her death was announced by her sister, Dee, through her agent. Reports later revealed that Barbie had underlying health conditions, including a history of epilepsy and possible heart issues, which may have made her particularly vulnerable.
When news of her passing broke, tributes poured in from fans and colleagues around the world, reflecting the profound impact she had on countless lives.
Barbie will be remembered not only for her iconic roles and remarkable talent but also for the warmth, charisma, and resilience she brought to every stage and screen. Her legacy endures across generations, a testament to a life and career that left an indelible mark on Asian entertainment.
Rest in peace, Barbie.
