Squid Game Season 3: Will there be a Season 4?
The final season left fans shocked, emotional, and full of questions. Here’s what we know about the future of Netflix’s most twisted survival game

Netflix’s hit series Squid Game dropped on the streaming platform, and let’s just say, viewers who made it to the end were absolutely blown away. Like the past seasons, this one delivered a gripping plot that had most of us on the edge of our seats. But despite the suspense and high-stakes drama, many fans were left with mixed feelings about how the series wrapped up, especially after all the literal blood, sweat, and tears that went into surviving each brutal round of the game.
(Spoiler alert: If you haven’t caught the final season yet, skip ahead to our article on what to expect from this buzzy season of Squid Game.)
When the final season dropped on June 27, fans rushed to binge all six episodes in one sitting, desperate to find out what happened and who managed to survive the blood-soaked rounds.
To everyone’s surprise, while the journey was filled with intense moments and heartbreaking character deaths, no one expected the winner to be 222’s newborn child. Yes, you read that right. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had warned us that this would be the darkest season yet, but like many others, we were completely stunned when that twist actually played out.
Hwang did hint at an unconventional ending, saying, “Some stories, by nature, can’t have one. If you try to force one, the essence is compromised. If a story is holding up a mirror to something, then it’s not always a happy ending. Squid Game is no exception.”
And wow, what a plot twist it was. No wonder everyone’s still talking about it.
Will there be a Squid Game Season 4?
After such an intense (and for some, depressing) ending, fans are naturally wondering: Will there be a fourth season?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed in a letter to fans that Season 3 would be the last.
“I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story,” he wrote. “We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you’re excited for what’s to come.”
So while the Squid Game journey may have ended, it’s safe to say its impact and that ending won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
Is there a possibility of a spinoff?
If you’ve made it to the final moments of episode six, then you’ll know: Hwang In-ho (aka the Front Man) ends up in Los Angeles to deliver 456’s, Gi-hun’s, belongings to his daughter, Ga-yeong. But just as he’s about to leave in an SUV, the car suddenly halts. He rolls down the window… and hears that unmistakable slapping sound.
Across the street, a suited recruiter is playing a familiar game of ddakji with an unsuspecting American man. But here’s the kicker, it’s Cate Blanchett in the recruiter role. Yes, not Gong Yoo, but THE Cate Blanchett.
She throws In-ho a cryptic look before turning back to the other man, suggesting something big could be brewing.
Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed anything, but at the Season 3 premiere in New York, Hwang Dong-hyuk did hint to People that something could be in the works.
“I cannot just tell right now when and how it’s going to happen,” he said. “But there is a chance.”
Aside from that, there was also a report from Deadline a while back that said David Fincher was working on a new English-language version of Squid Game. It’s not a remake, but an entirely different story set in the US. This came after earlier rumours that he might’ve been tapped to do a Squid Game film for Netflix, but the latest update pointed to a fresh series instead.
Whether or not Cate Blanchett’s recent cameo and the tease of a new game mean something more is still unclear. That said, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk did hint to Entertainment Weekly that more could be on the cards, saying: “I’m not trying to say that I’m going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never.”
