What’s in store for Gi-hun in Squid Game Season 3?
Season 2 has left both viewers - and Gi-hun - on a brutal cliffhanger, where he weeps in front of his best friend, Jung-Bae’s lifeless body. With most of his newfound friends presumed to be dead after their failed rebellion, Gi-hun is left devastated and alone.
With nothing left to lose, Gi-hun enters Season 3 with an air of misery and gloom, a dreary state which will affect his future decisions in more lethal games. Actor Lee Jung Jae who plays Gi-hun, explains during the show’s latest press conference that Gi-hun’s moment of despair is a vital turning point that will shape his future actions, after suffering multiple losses in failed attempts to stop the games.
What’s in store for the other main characters?
Foreshadowing, bigger, greater, and even deadlier games that are about to come, players are forced to make greater decisions with increasingly grave consequences.
While Gi-hun is torn apart with guilt from the deaths his staged rebellion has brought, In-ho has shed his innocent persona as Player 001, returning as the Front Man, donning his black mask and ready to welcome his elite VIPs.
“As he observes Gi-hun, the Frontman also begins devising new plans,” Lee Byung-hyun, playing the Front Man, said. The connection-turned-feud between Gi-hun and Front Man seems to be never-ending, whether he is in disguise as Player 001 or his true identity as the Front Man.
Aside from the main feud, here are some of the few things that are happening with the other characters:
- Across the sea, In-ho’s (Front Man) brother Jun-ho, the police officer, continues to search for the remote island, all while being unaware of a traitor close to him.
- Junhee, Player 222, is implied to have given birth during the chaos, with a baby’s cry resonating at the end of the teaser. She also faces an intense clash with her ex-lover Myunggi, Player 333, in the midst of a game, where their outcome between life or death is determined by a jump rope.
- In a heartbreaking twist, the beloved mum and son pair, Yong-sik, Player 007 and Geum-ja, Player 149, are seen on two different teams, forced to go head-to-head against each other. It’s either family or survival–and it cannot be both. Emotions run high with this duo, while the audience’s hearts shatter in real-time as they await their outcome.
- Fan favourites Hyun-ju, Player 120 and Dae-ho, Player 388, make their return as seen braving through the new games, along with resident villain Nam-gyu. Fans are excited to see what the future holds for them, in a game involving their lives.
- Finally, tugging at everyone’s heartstrings is North Korean defector turned ruthless pink guard, No-eul, and Gyeong-seok, Player 246, connected by No-eul’s compassion for his sick daughter. Season 2 left everyone on a cliffhanger as a gun is pointed at him — will sympathy or order win?
Are there any spoilers for Season 3?

The trailer unveils a glimpse of what is about to come in Season 3 — and it’s more than enough to give us goosebumps.
In a brutal game shown in both the trailer and teaser, intimidated players cautiously walk up to a giant Young-hee doll facing a mysterious boy doll, followed by the blink of a green traffic light. It is revealed to be a horrifying game of jump rope, where missing a single precise jump results in falling to one’s death. With barely any room for error on the narrow platform, a split-second and centimetre precision determines your survival.
A second game is newly introduced in the trailer, appearing to involve knives, keys, and boxes. Key characters such as Hyun-ju, Player 120 and the shaman Seon-Nyeo, Player 044, are seen conquering these games, leading the other players through the games.
While the games themselves are deadly, the decorations of the game rooms are eerily whimsical, reminiscent of childlike wonder. Ceilings are decorated with stars, and the ground is painted with flowers, as lifeless corpses land and pile up on top of it. The contrast between innocent decorations and fatal deaths further amplifies the horror in a sadistic manner.
Foreshadowing, bigger, greater, and even deadlier games that are about to come, players are forced to make significant decisions with increasingly grave consequences. Son and mother are pitted against each other, betrayals between friends are imminent, and emotional wounds are about to be cut deep. The jaw-dropping moment in the trailer is when Gi-hun is revealed to be a finalist yet again, emerging in a sleek suit about to confront the Front Man, looking more tense than ever.
Every frame teased is charged with intent and clues, making fans play detective and attempt to piece together the final plot and outcome. However, like any other season of Squid Game, nothing ever plays out as expected. The show thrives on unpredictability, and fans are excited for their expectations and theories to be disrupted and enlightened. Without doubt, the anticipation for what the final season holds has never been more intense.
Fan theories and hidden easter eggs: What are fans saying about Season 3?

One of the biggest rumours includes V (Kim Taehyung of BTS) joining the Season 3 cast due to his close connections with the Squid Game cast.
To put the cherry on top, actress Park Gyu-young, who plays No-eul, posted a seemingly harmless selfie which accidentally revealed the silhouette of actor Lee Jin-wook, playing Kang Gyeong-seok, Player 246 in the background, dressed in pink guard attire, implying he survived the revolt and turned from player to guard. Regarding the spoilers, Hwang said he chose to “treat it as an unfortunate incident and let it go.”
Assuring fans there are bigger surprises in store, Squid Game Season 3 seems to be unaffected by seeming spoilers, with excitement and anticipation surrounding the show still running high. From new deadly games to new faces, fans are dying (so are some characters) to find out: Who will be able to make it out alive?
Is there any chance of a Season 4?
“As most of you know, Seasons 2 and 3 were written, filmed, and produced all at once. We couldn’t change Season 3 based on the reactions to Season 2. Nothing has changed in that regard. Since Season 2 ended without fully wrapping up the story arcs or character narratives, I think much of the disappointment people felt will likely be resolved when they watch Season 3,” Hwang said.
Hwang confirmed that Season 3 serves as the final chapter in the franchise — at least for now.
“We discussed and proceeded on not making a Season 4 while working on Season 3 with Netflix. Once you watch Season 3, you’ll see that while a Season 4 could be made, it doesn’t necessarily need to be. Although I am considering the possibility of doing a spinoff, or perhaps something like a spinoff prequel,” he said.
While the final season wraps the original story, director Hwang has hinted that a spin-off might be on the cards—so don’t rule out a return to the game just yet.
