Birds of a Feather

2/12

You wouldn’t think it, but Birds of a Feather – this pretty-as-a-picture cafe with ethereal cloud lamps, verdant walls of ferns, and skylights has an unexpected streak to it.

There are no eggs benedict or croissants to be found here, but instead contemporary Sichuan fare. Opt for a cocktail or a beer to sip on, and spend a laidback afternoon with your friends. The One Night in Chengdu – baijiu, peach, yuzu and refreshing cucumber cordial – certainly piqued our interest.

Arteastiq

3/12

This pretty tea lounge and art jamming space in Mandarin Gallery already has a bit of a rep for being a spot for tai tais, thanks to its refined look. The café has been decked out in a mod-Victorian-inspired look, with plush sofas and colourful chairs juxtaposed next to the floor-to-ceiling glass panels.

In addition to the usual high tea sets which feature fruit and floral teas, as well as Chinese and Japanese teas, there are also ‘tea’tox beverages like the Honey Lavender Tea which comes with a sprig of organic lavender in the cup – which helps infuse the aroma of lavender even more.

My Art Space

Part art school, part cafe, My Art Space is a great spot to hang out at on a hot sunny day.

Why? The ample sunlight that streams in through the skylights and glass walls as well the surrounding greenery from Istana Park make you feel like you’re away from the city though you’re in the heart of it.

Walk past the studio where art students will give you serious painting inspo, before entering the cafe to find a cloudy glass floor that shows glimpses of the fountain the building is perched on.

Then choose a simple cup of Gryphon tea from the a cutesy palette-shaped menu before settling down in a corner. A beautiful location that’s unpretentious and fuss-free; we think you’ll like it here.

We picked PS.Cafe for its location and views. The café boasts spots that overlook the majesty of the jungle so you can enjoy the beauty of nature while you’re working on your laptop or reading a book.

Also, we think PS. Cafe deserves brownie points for its ambience. The space has a laid-back look that still looks as good it did when it opened in 2005. What’s more, they also serve some delectable dishes that will definitely satisfy your tastebuds.

In the hipster enclave of Tiong Bahru, Plain Vanilla’s known for some really delicious and moist cupcakes.

Pair the sweet treat with some loose leaf tea and settle down in the open storefront. Its interiors change from time to time, but regardless, will always be Instagram-ready. Think swing, wooden tables, carpet grass, and pretty bicycles with baskets artfully arranged at the shopfront.

We don’t know about you, but we’re getting mod-kampung vibes, and we love it.

Hvala

9/12

Freshly revamped, tucked inside 111 Somerset Road is this modern, minimalist Japanese teahouse that epitomises the meaning of zen.

Feel immediately at ease as you walk through its glass doors and peruse six pages of its drinks menu; in comparison, the dessert items only take up one page. There are more than 30 types of green tea beverages to choose from, and the Matcha Hojicha Latte comes highly recommended.

The Brewing Ground

10/12

Part of The Yards – a hodgepodge of art studios, drama spaces and enrichment centres – in Joo Chiat, this brunch spot is an elegant glasshouse complete with exposed beams and hanging plants. The alfresco deck also offers extra seating for those out with their furry friends.

We highly recommend the Avocado & Ricotta Tartine, an even more souped up version of smashed avocado on toast. On top of the avocado, we found globs of ricotta, sweet cheery tomatoes, pickled radish slices, and almonds, all of which danced perfectly in sync upon our tongues. The Burrata Tartine is another delightful option.

East Coast Commune

11/12

The décor at East Coast Commune is simply an extension of the tropical scenery at East Coast Park – but with air-con. Commissioned local marine-themed art created by local artist Wu Yanrong adorns the brightly-lit space, while the walls have been painted in teal.

Head down on a weekday, order a pot of tea or bottle of Kombucha by Fizzicle, relax, and read. We cannot guarantee the same treatment on weekends though, as the place is a family-friendly hangout.

Operated by home-grown brand Roast & Toast (their flagship café is located in Buangkok Square), the menu features a mix of western and local favourites. The self-watering green walls just outside of the café also makes for a great photo backdrop. Fun fact: There are a total of 2,700 plants on the walls, which includes Singapore’s national flower Vanda Miss Joaquim.
