Walk around Singapore, and you’ll definitely come across shops selling colourful bowls of açaí. They're topped with other fruits, grains or – ironically since it’s supposed to be a health food – even chocolate chips.

This delectable frozen treat comes from a berry grown in the Amazon, which has been a savoury mainstay in the diet of locals. Its meandering road to global ubiquity began as açaí bars selling frozen açaí (due to how they’re easily perishable) popped up in Brazilian cities. Subsequently, it spread to the US as a superfood

It gained popularity for its antioxidant properties and low sugar content. That, and how delicious it is. The texture is like sorbet, with the taste of wild berries and dark chocolate. Soon, Açaí became popularised all over the world, especially with the advent of social media. As influencers posted their aesthetic bowls and smoothies, demand rose.

That trend has spread to Singapore as well, which is home to some fantastic açaí bars.

Ola Açaí

1/8

One of the more wallet-friendly options, Ola Açaí’s signature bowls begin at only $5.90. Their açaí tastes earthier, their portion sizes are generous, and they even have a loyalty card programme where you can redeem a free bowl after 10 visits. Apart from açaí, they also have waffles, smoothies and a range of gelato flavours.

They are located at 210 Hougang St 21, #01-273, Singapore 530210, and are open from 11am-10pm everyday. You can find their menu here.

Nana’s Açaí

2/8

Outside the bustle of the shopping malls that açaí shops tend to occupy, Nana’s is located at a homely Toa Payoh HDB block. Like Summer Açaí, they have sorbets which can be added into the açaí base. They have a range of drizzle options (the sauce that’s added on top of the bowl), from almond butter to honey. With closing times as late as 11pm, they’re also a great spot for late night cravings.

They are located at Blk 116 Lor 2 Toa Payoh, #01-150, Singapore 310116, and are open from 10am-10pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and from 10am-11pm on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The Berry Spot

3/8

One of the most highly-reviewed açaí spots (4.9 stars on Google), The Berry Spot offers unlimited toppings, which together with the açaí having high quality and the decent price point (their medium bowl of 360ml comes in at $11.9), makes for good value-for-money. Their açaí isn’t too sweet as well (many açaí shops will add sugar into their açaí blends to make it more appealing), which is good if you’re on a diet. Being at the Esplanade Mall (think of the view!), it makes for a fantastic date spot.

They are located at 8 Raffles Ave., #01-K7 Esplanade Mall, Singapore 039802, and are open from 10am-10pm on weekdays and 9:30am-10pm on weekends.

Project Açaí

4/8

For those clamouring for more of that açaí flavour, look no further than Project Açaí. Their açaí is blended, on average, every hour, which ensures that the texture is thick and smooth and the flavour is fresh.

Summer Açaí

5/8

A go-to açaí spot for many, Summer Açai has a ton of options. From whether you want an açaí base or one with other sorbets added, to a whole range of topping options with tongue-in-cheek names (‘Dis A Ppear for their bowl with a açaí and pear sorbet base), to even whether you want it in a smooth, creamy ready-to-eat texture or a frozen texture so it doesn’t melt away as you bring it home.

While they’re not halal-certified, they claim their raw ingredients used are halal.

Randy Indulgence Acai Bar

8/8

Randy Indulgence Acai Bar tends to have some of the best promotions available, and they're available frequently too. Their açaí base is creamy and not too sweet, though it can be a bit glutinous in texture, and they tend to be generous with the sauces as well.
