If there’s one local food that K-pop star Sandara Park missed in her five years since she visited Singapore, it’s chilli crab. The member of K-pop girl group 2NE1 expressed her longing for the dish during her recent appearance at the press conference for Waterbomb Singapore 2024.
Reflecting on her absence from the Lion City due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she shared, "We used to have a large fan base in Singapore, and suddenly after Covid, I couldn’t come here, so I really missed Singapore."
Adding to the excitement of her return, the singer treated attendees to two captivating performances: her solo single "Festival" and the timeless 2NE1 hit "I Am the Best."
Fans who missed her press conference appearance need not worry, as the star is set to grace the stage once again at Waterbomb Singapore, scheduled to take place at Sentosa’s Siloso Beach on Aug 24 and 25. Joining her will be a stellar lineup of K-pop acts including Got7’s BamBam, singer-songwriter Bibi, singer Kwon Eunbi, girl group Viviz, and dance crew Team Bebe. Additionally, Thai singer Sorn and Singaporean musicians lullaboy, Alyph, and Haven will also showcase their talents at the festival.
During the press conference, the singer also offered insights into her upcoming Waterbomb performances, her solo artist journey, and her love for Southeast Asia.
It can be really boring to travel by myself and standby in the waiting room by myself, but it’s okay because I have my fans when I come out on stage. At first, I was also really worried about singing 2NE1 songs solo, because it’s my first time singing the songs by myself. But when the music started playing, I was really surprised because everyone in the crowd started singing along, and so I realised I’m not alone and I’m more confident now.
During my time in 2NE1, we delivered powerful performances with strong, charismatic music. However, as a solo artist, I embrace a different style. My voice has a sweet and soft tone, [complemented by] a cute and wholesome image.
The contrast between my music with 2NE1 and my solo work is very different, but I think I can do both.
I think that I’m still a baby when it comes to creating my own music. [When I was working on my solo album], I decided to talk to my friends who are really talented and creative, like Sunwoojunga, Gray and Heize. I got so much advice from them.
So, if you have a problem, don’t be afraid to ask your friends for help!
Being a member of 2NE1 will be the best thing to ever happen in my life, forever. I really love being on stage with the girls. They’re really talented, wonderful, and kind. We really love performing for our fans. 2NE1 will be the best part of my life, I think, until I die.
I love Southeast Asia because I was brought up in the Philippines. I love the hot weather, food, energy and people. It’s a different culture, so I do feel more free when I’m in Southeast Asian countries.
Just get ready to have fun and go crazy! This year, I have a different set list from last year [when I performed at Waterbomb Suwon]. [I will be performing] songs that I didn’t perform yet, new music arrangement, new choreo, and of course, less outfit…maybe?
Juju [editor’s note: Sandara’s stylist] – are you ready? I think my stylist is not ready. (laughs) In August, I think I should wear a bikini! Please prepare a bikini for Singapore’s Waterbomb.
Waterbomb is different because we’re allowed to get wet. I’m surprised by myself as well as I find myself going crazy on stage.
As K-pop stars, we’re usually afraid to get wet or to sweat on stage, because my makeup such as eyeliner might get smudged. That’s a big problem. But at Waterbomb, everything is [okay]. Everyone is getting wet together, and we’re all having fun.
