Novita Jong on intentional leadership and lifting women in tech
As a mentor in the Her World Mentorship Programme 2025, Novita Jong champions bold transitions and growth in male-dominated spaces

According to Novita Jong – who leads technology commercialisation and venturebuilding initiatives at NUS Innovation & Enterprise – mentorship isn’t just about sharing experience; it’s about creating space for others to rise while continuing to grow yourself.
It has always been her way of paying it forward, says the tech industry veteran, who has built a career through high-growth roles at Google, Twitter, and Grab. “Having led, built, and scaled businesses across the region, I find deep fulfilment in sharing those lessons – especially with women returning to the workforce or navigating male-dominated spaces,” she says.
Her first formal mentorship was a defining moment in her boardroom career trajectory. Being mentored by a senior male board director reinforced the value of personalised guidance – and the importance of male allies in advancing diversity. “Our conversations were honest and deeply empowering. They reminded me that challenging the norms takes both skill and courage.”
Now a mentor herself, Novita is just as focused on fostering a culture of learning in the organisations she serves.
“Mentorship should be woven into how success is built,” she says. “It’s not a one-off initiative. When senior leaders openly share their experiences, and when people feel safe to ask questions and show up fully – that’s when mentorship thrives.”
What inspired you to volunteer as a mentor for the Her World Mentorship Programme?
One of my toughest transitions was stepping into a board role as the youngest and only woman in the room. Mentorship helped me reframe imposter syndrome, find my voice, and embrace growth at the edge of discomfort. That’s why I continue to mentor today.
Most valuable advice from a mentor?
“You don’t need all the answers now – just trust that you can figure them out.” That gave me permission to walk away from a dream role, rediscover myself, and keep moving forward with courage.
How does one make the most of a mentorship?
I still remember walking into my first formal mentorship session, unsure of what to expect. I had questions but was afraid of asking the wrong ones – until my mentor said, “I will follow your lead in every session, make it what you need.” That was a turning point. I began treating each conversation like a checkpoint for my goals, not a script. When I mentor others, I encourage clear objectives, actionable feedback, and follow-through. Mentorship thrives on intention, openness, and accountability to growth.
