The Her World Mentorship Programme returns with a focus on supporting women re-entering the workforce. This year’s mentors share what inspired them to take part.

“I’ve benefitted immensely from having great mentors throughout my career,” says Fernn Lim, chief operating officer (COO) at Audax, a digital banking platform backed by Standard Chartered.

“The Her World Mentorship Programme allows me to give back while learning from the next generation of leaders. Their ability to view challenges differently and embrace creative solutions is a breath of fresh air.”

Her career journey was shaped by her time as a mentee under Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) BoardAgender programme, which she credits for expanding her network and deepening her understanding of board dynamics.

“Beyond the technical knowledge, it introduced me to my mentor Ooi Huey Tyng, who offered open, honest guidance that encouraged and empowered me to thrive – as a COO and as a working mother in fintech,” she shares.

With three decades of experience spanning senior roles at global banks, payments technology firms and fintech companies – including Citibank, DBS, and Grab – Huey Tyng has established herself as a leader and business builder. For Fernn, mentorship is a two-way street – one paved with shared wisdom, bold ideas, and mutual growth.

Now, she’s paying it forward – not just through this programme, but also as an advocate for women in leadership via initiatives like Deloitte’s Board Ready Women, and Money20/20’s Rise Up.

“It begins with leadership commitment and creating environments where learning is truly celebrated,” she adds.

How has mentorship influenced your personal or professional growth?

Professionally, I learned to take intentional steps – whether it’s mastering new domains, making informed decisions, or taking on larger responsibilities. Personally, I’ve learned to balance work and family with a strong support structure. As a working mother, guarding my time and being present at key moments has been essential.

Most valuable advice from a mentor?

Growth often lies outside our comfort zone – whether it’s taking on new responsibilities or making difficult decisions. Learning to navigate discomfort is key to thriving as a leader.

How does one make the most of a mentorship?

I follow the three Gs: Goals, Grit, and Gift. Set clear goals. Have the grit to follow through, even on tough days. And always recognise the gift of a great mentor. Chemistry and mutual commitment also matter – alignment from the start ensures meaningful outcomes.
