The athleisure movement is one of the most prominent fashion trends to date, with both high-street and luxury brands getting in on the act. So it seems that the comfy yet functional sports luxe style is here to stay. And it’s a no-brainer to understand why: athleisure is synonymous with comfort. And comfort never goes out of style.
The downside, however, is there’s a fine line between looking like a slob and slaying the look. Naturally, only looking effortlessly chic is welcome. So, take notes.
1. Wear it with a suit
From left to right: Orseund Iris box cropped pinstriped wool-blend blazer, S$987.18 from Net-a-Porter; Nike The 10: Nike Air Force 1 Low, S$1,370 from Farfetch; Adam Selman Sport neon stretch sports bra, S$81.32 from Net-a-Porter; Wandler Anna small neon leather belt bag, S$540 from Net-a-Porter; Nike The 10: Nike Air Force 1 Low, S$1,370 from Farfetch; Orseund Iris cropped belted pinstriped wool-blend flared pants, S$933.76 from Net-a-Porter
Throw on this cropped blazer suit with its matching shortened flare pants. Layer it over a bright neon yellow sports bra for a pop of fun (as well as a nod to another of this season’s hottest trends – neon). We adore this suit for being a fanciful twist on the conventional pantsuit, with its bell sleeves and shorter-than-usual bottoms.
Top it off with the same pair of kicks tennis superstar Serena Williams was spotted wearing at this year’s Met Gala. If it’s good enough for Serena, it’s good enough for us.
2. Sport some cycling shorts
From left to right: Balenciaga logo-print cotton-jersey T-shirt, S$425 from Net-a-Porter; House of CB pastel neon orange cycling shorts, £15.00 (S$26.70); Gucci GG Marmont quilted leather belt bag, US$1,709.91 (S$2,327.02) from Net-a-Porter; Maria La Rosa ribbed organic cotton socks, S$36.85 from Net-a-Porter; Puma Roma Amor Sport, S$165
Show some leg in yet another S/S19 statement item – bicycle shorts. This hot-weather friendly coordinate pays tribute to the OG trendsetter, Princess Diana, circa 1995. Back then, the Princess was already pairing orange bicycle shorts with a vintage pullover, mid-calf socks, and dad sneaks, which are also so hot this season. And bicycle shorts in this year’s Pantone colour of the year? Need we say more?
3. Go big with the logo
From left to right: Gucci oversized embellished printed cotton-terry sweatshirt, S$1,874.18 from Net-a-Porter; MSGM side logo stripe track pants, S$320 from Farfetch; Gucci printed intarsia-knit headband, S$279.20, from Net-a-Porter; Versace black logo-print belt bag, S$662 from Farfetch; Puma Cali Exotic, S$159
Don’t hold back with the flashy logos. It’s never a better time to celebrate logomania than now – almost all the major fashion powerhouses, from Gucci to sportswear brands like Kappa, are riding the wave. Remember, the more logos the merrier.
4. Leggings, but better
From left to right: Burberry cashmere turtleneck sweater, S$860 from Net-a-Porter; Jennifer Fisher samira gold-plated clip hoop earrings, S$581.22 from Net-a-Porter; Burberry checked canvas sneakers S$482.31 from Net-a-Porter; Spanx faux stretch-leather leggings, S$117.86 from Net-a-Porter; Charles & Keith chunky chain bucket bag, S$69.90
Wouldn’t it be an absolute dream to live happily ever after in leggings and more leggings? But just slipping on a basic stretchy pair is plain lazy – and passe. Take it up a notch with this pair of faux leather leggings designed to shape and support you in all the right places. With a power waistband to smooth out your tummy, this pair’s bound to keep you looking snatched while concealing bulges. You can wear it with just about anything, but we especially like pairing it a sweater (here’s our guide to buying the best sweater for your body shape).
5. Get into a matching two-piece set
From left to right: Adidas crop top, S$56 form Farfetch; Adidas x Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Cream White, S$575 from Farfetch; Adidas adibreak tracksuit bottoms, S$98 from Farfetch; Pinko cropped leather jacket, S$622 from Farfetch; Dsquared2 reflective belt bag, S$745 from Farfetch
For last-minute quick fixes, turn to a matching two-piece set. Simply build your outfit around the cornerstone of athleisure – the tracksuit . This pastel set from Adidas hits all the right spots with its jolly colours. Dress it up with a white biker leather jacket, and style them as separates with other pieces in your wardrobe.
