Camp’s the theme of this year’s Met Gala. No, not the one where you pitch tents and gather around a fire to roast marshmallows – although that was apparently Celine Dion’s first thought when heard the theme, according to Vulture. It’s the one where exaggeration, flamboyance and theatricality reign. So how do you pull off a look that’s over the top without being too garish? These stars showed us how.

If you look back at previous Met Galas, you’ll notice that there are rare moments that stand out and that will be talked about for years to come – remember Rihanna’s omelette dress from Chinese designer Guo Pei in 2015? This year, there were several show-stopping eye looks (see supermodel Gigi Hadid and Swedish singer Lykke Li) but none came close to Lady Gaga’s luscious and bejewelled gold and black lashes. The proportion, the thickness of the falsies, the gold glitter, the white, purple and black eyeliner, the bronzed skin and the fuschia pink lippie – everything was perfectly executed and on theme, thanks to her long-time makeup artist Sara Tanno, of course.

With a thick-banded pale pink hairband, sky-high beehive hair that’s let down and embellished with tiny flowers, ivory skin and lips that are just as pale, Lily Collins was the epitome of unnatural, campy beauty. We love that she went with matte pastel purple eyeshadow instead of green to match her Cartier jewels, and how her eyeliner and falsies were perfection.

Spiderman actress Zendaya’s Cinderella dress and pumpkin carriage clutch was on theme, sure. But her eyeshadow, which matched her dress and hairband perfectly was the glue that pulled the look together.

Riverdale star Madelaine Petsch’s red hair and pink eyeshadow and lips provided a great contrast to her ice green gown. Like Zendaya, she proved that restrained campiness doesn’t have to be boring.

Winter may almost be over in Sansa Stark’s Winterfell, but actress Sophie Turner brought a touch of cool frostiness with silver glitter on her gelled-up Hollywood waves. We have no bone to pick with the dark blue eyeshadow as well.

It’s amazing how a few gelled-down curls can elevate an otherwise boring look, as Kendall Jenner shows. Don’t get us wrong – we love the colour palette and impeccable makeup. We’re just saying the look would have been pretty expected if not for the hair.

Here’s another monochrome look to round up our list, from none other than Scream Queen’s star Emma Robert. Her pink smoky eye not only brings out the green in her eyes, it keeps the look from hitting Snoozeville.
