“Busy” is probably the most overused word in the English language. Many of us don’t take the time to, well, just do nothing. So put yourself first and take time out from your overflowing schedule to do things for you. You don’t even have to leave the country or take time off work. 

1. Supermarket Sweep

Don’t rush through your grocery list like you usually do. Instead, wander around the supermarket for a bit, browsing the aisles. It’s a good way to relax (looking at tons of items on the shelves is a great way to get your mind off real life) or take a few minutes to think about anything that isn’t work-related. You might also pick up some new and interesting food ideas.

2. Take A Class

Whether it’s pottery, calligraphy or judo…sign up for a class that’ll teach you a new skill. And do it alone. Once you’ve committed to a course (and paid for it!), you’ll find it easier to take the time to actually attend classes, no excuses. And that’s your perfect way to get some much-needed me time. Plus, you’ll pick up a skill too. 

3. Log Off

Make it a point to tune out from your phone full of emails and social media posts for perhaps half an hour each day (longer if you can afford the time). Then do whatever you want during this time. Enjoy a long bath, read a trashy novel or binge-watch the latest Netflix drama…this is the time for you to do whatever makes you happy, with no unnecessary distractions. 

4. Get Arty

Go to the museum one Saturday a month. Spend a couple of hours walking around and go for coffee or a meal before or after, if you want more me time. Singapore citizens and permanent residents enjoy free entry to most museums on our island, which gives you another good reason to do this.

5. Meditate

Do this not because it’s the ‘in’ thing, but because it’s the best way to achieve a calm state of mind. And you don’t have to go to a quiet park and sit still for an hour; if you really can’t afford the time, spend five minutes sitting on your bed before you get out of it each morning. Close your eyes, take deep breaths and let your mind wander to a good place. And relax.
