GROUP DATE
My two single best friends, Ann and Rina, and I have toyed with the idea of a triple date before. At one point, we were so keen on the idea that we even set up an account on dating app Tinder (aptly called Best Friends), uploading tons of our group photos and stating in our bio that we were after a triple date with three single male buddies. Unfortunately, all we got were crude propositions, so that idea was canned… until Grouvly, a new social club in town, approached me to try its service, which matches a trio of girlfriends to a trio of guy friends and arranges for them to meet up for drinks – perfect! The only catch? You don’t get any information about the guys, or see what they look like, until you meet them.

THE OUTING
My friends and I reach the bar where Grouvly booked our reservation for the night, slightly after 9pm. We are shown to a dimly lit table where two men, Jared and Ryan, are already seated. First impressions? They look to be around our age (mid- to late-20s) and are both easy on the eye. The guys introduce themselves quickly – and explain that the third member of the group is running late – after which we settle in and order our first round of drinks. Over the next 20 minutes or so, we cover the basics: how we knew one another, where we grew up and what we do for a living. Jared tells us that he works in the medical industry and is a part-time model, while Ryan, an amateur mixed martial arts fighter, works in an agricultural trading company. The pair, who met while serving national service, also attended the same university in the US. By the time we order our second round of drinks, the remaining member of the group, Aaron (who works with Ryan), arrives. The conversation flows nicely, with no awkward silences (phew!); we talk about music festivals, upcoming movies and our adventures (and misadventures) on Tinder. After the third round of drinks, we move to another bar, where Ryan – the most boisterous member of the group – suggests we open a bottle of tequila.

Two hours (and several tequila shots) later, I notice some subtle flirting between Rina and Jared, but it doesn’t go further than that. The six of us get along swimmingly and there are no dull moments throughout the night, but it feels more like a group outing with friends than a triple date – which is exactly how Grouvly markets its service. At the end of the night, Rina and Jared exchange numbers, while the rest of us settle for adding one another on Facebook. 

THE VERDICT
I can honestly say that I had more fun on my Grouvly outing than any Tinder date I’ve been on. Why? Just having my two best friends around made me more comfortable, and I love the fact that I got to meet the guys in person straight off the bat, instead of spending days chatting online before any plans are made. I feel that Grouvly really nailed this match (or maybe we got lucky!) – the guys were aff able, witty and right up our alley. There may not have been any romantic sparks or major attraction, but we do get along great, so I’m not complaining. In fact, the six of us now have our own Whatsapp group, which we use for planning movie nights.

To sum it up: I’m not ruling out the possibility of meeting a romantic partner through Grouvly, but my opinion is that you’re more likely to end up with a fresh group of super-fun drinking buddies instead. What’s not to love?

HOW IT WORKS
1. The lead of each group signs up on the Grouvly website (www.grouvly.com), by linking his or her Facebook profile.
2. The lead indicates which date the group is available for an outing.
3. Grouvly matches the lead with another Grouvly user of the opposite sex, using information from their Facebook profiles.
4. Once Grouvly has found a match, both leads are directed to make payment ($25 per person, inclusive of one round of drinks) for themselves and their two wingmen/wingwomen on the company’s website.
5. A day before the date, the venue and outing details are sent to both leads via e-mail.
