I went on a Hot Girl Walk and now I know why TikTok is obsessed with it

This low-intensity and beginner-friendly tiktok trend might just be the perfect way to focus on both physical and mental health

Move over, ‘hot girl summer’– this summer, it’s all about the ‘hot girl walk’. The latest TikTok fitness trend is all about throwing on your favourite track shoes and either hopping onto a treadmill or heading outdoors for a walk around your neighbourhood whilst keeping positive thoughts in your mind

While the idea of going for a long walk is nothing new, the general idea of the hot girl walk is to opt out of competitive gym culture whilst committing to a mindful, meditative walk that prioritises self-care. The term was first coined by University of Southern California student Mia Lind (@exactlyliketheothergirls on TikTok), who was searching for a form of exercise that she didn’t dread, as revealed in an interview with Huffpost. She ultimately chose long walks for their meditative element, and upon realising that there’s a stigma attached to walking with many viewing it as not a legitimate form of exercise, she decided to “rebrand” walks with the term ‘hot girl walk’. 

The trend has since taken off on TikTok, with the hashtag #HotGirlWalk garnering over 420 million views on the social media platform. Many who jumped onto the trend have encouraged others to go on a hot girl walk as a means to reduce stress, get in shape, and boost self-esteem.  

And despite what the cheeky name might suggest, the hot girl walk is gender-inclusive – the trend is open to anyone who is seeking to exercise with purpose while manifesting their dreams.

So, how does a hot girl walk work?

While the main gist of going on a hot girl walk is to walk for however long or short you’d like – Lind recommends approximately six kilometres – whilst rocking out to your go-to playlist, what you’re thinking while you’re on the walk matters. "A lot of people are thinking that the hot girl walk is about weight loss, but it's not. The biggest transformations are the ones that start internally," Mia explains, of the walk.

According to Mia, there are three tenets to keep in mind:

1. Think about what you're grateful for.
2. Think through your goals and the steps to achieve them.
3. Remind yourself of how hot you are.

To better understand the trend, I threw on my trusty workout shoes, cued some empowering tracks with a heavy bass, and set off for a hot girl walk on a balmy evening after a stressful day.

To be frank, I wasn’t expecting to get anything much out of the walk since it was, well, a walk. But as I trudged around the neighbourhood with Queen Bey belting out about girls running the world through my headphones, I kept reminding myself of the three pointers: what I’m grateful for (the heavy shower in the afternoon, which offered a cool respite from the sweltering heat of our island); my goals and what I’m doing to achieve them; and how hot I am (reminded myself by chanting ‘I’m the main character in my life’).

Despite my initial apprehension, I did feel much better after the walk. I typically have a million thoughts running through my head when working out, and I found that focusing on affirmative thoughts rather than mentally rearranging my never-ending to-do list was definitely a mood-booster.

Walking is also great cardio, and the low-intensity workout is also perfect for beginners as an affordable and easy way to get active without any additional equipment or a gym membership. The endorphins released also definitely helped to uplift my spirits.

Tips for going on a hot girl walk

1. Be flexible – tailor the walk to suit you. There’s no need to walk the entire recommended six kilometres – I certainly didn’t –  and there’s no rule saying that you can’t expand the three affirmative thoughts to four, five, or more.

2. Listen to music rather than a podcast – When I first started my walk, I listened to a podcast but soon switched over to my go-to playlist when I realised that the podcast was distracting me from my thoughts. A catchy beat can help keep up the pace of your walk, but if you’re not a music person, you can try walking without plugging in as well.

3. Put your phone on silent or ‘do not disturb’ – Five minutes into my walk, I found myself engrossed with replying texts from friends. The best way to avoid getting distracted is to mute your notifications when on the walk.
