Love is a journey, not a destination

1/8

There are relationship milestones that every couple would look back on like the first date, first kiss, one-year anniversary, first “I love you” uttered, but there are also less obvious milestones like making a visit to the doctor’s office or going away on a trip together for the first time.

If you and your significant other survived these 7 relationship milestones, you can rest easy knowing that you two are probably in it for the long haul.

Celebrating birthdays together

2/8

You know things are getting serious when you start to plan something for your other half’s birthday way in advance. It means that you’re that you’re confident about your relationship and you can see a future together.

In an instagram post, local actor Jeffrey Xu wished his girlfriend, actress Felicia Chin, a Happy Birthday with a heart-warming caption in Chinese that says, “You don’t have to remember how many birthdays we’ve celebrated together. Just know that from here on out, I’ll be here to celebrate all of your birthdays to come”. Talk about couple goals.

You are perfectly comfortable being with your partner even when you’re not in your Sunday best

3/8

Once you’ve moved past that honeymoon period, you are likely to be exposed to some of the not-so-glamorous habits and quirks of your partner. You might also start to notice that you’re no longer primping to impress your significant other. You are comfortable being seen without a trace of makeup on and your other half is perfectly fine being around you with his unkempt just-rolled-out-of-bed-hair and morning breath.

This isn’t a bad thing, it means that you’ve already established a certain level of comfort with your partner and you’re willing to accept and move past each other’s flaws and imperfections.

Meet the family

5/8

Pronouns start to change from “I” to “We”

6/8

You know your relationship is looking golden when you respond with a “we” instead of an “I”. When your friend asks if you’ll be going to a concert, you reply saying, “we’ll be there”. When you’re going through a rough patch at work, your partner reassures you by saying, “we’ll get through this”.

Moving from saying “I” to a “we” is not just a matter of semantics, according to a study by the University of California, couples who use pronouns like “we”, “ours” and “us” were more satisfied with their relationship and marriage than couples who used pronouns like “I”, “me” and “you”. If you find yourself saying “we”, “ours” and “us”, it could mean that you’ve formed a sense of being part of a team with your partner and teamwork is important in any relationship.
