They say the way to your lover’s heart is through their stomach and we couldn’t agree more, especially when it comes to first dates. The pressure of choosing a good location with good food can be oh-so stressful when you want to impress your date. But what if it doesn’t have to be? First dates shouldn’t be a burden to plan. They should be simple and laid-back; a chance to authentically get to know each other. That being said, would you consider going to the hawker centre for your first date?
Cheap, casual and unlimited options
A recent study by Bumble observed that 89% of Singaporeans are indeed willing to go on dates at hawker centres. To many hawker centres offer a more casual setting for getting to know one another and it’s a little more affordable than going to a restaurant. Not to mention, there’s also an infinite number of food options, from chicken rice to roti prata, so you’re spoilt for choice.
Speaking of options, when it comes to casual dates at the hawker centre, you’d be less worried about picking out something fancy from your wardrobe. You can show up in an outfit that’s a little more casual and you don’t have to splurge on a new dress to impress your date.
Hot, crowded and a hint of “Are you even trying?”
Despite hawkers providing a comfortable environment, they unfortunately do not create the romantic atmosphere that most would prefer for a date. More than half of the survey respondents felt that hawkers are too hot, too crowded, and too noisy. And to some, it’s honestly not the perfect place to get your flirt on.
So it comes as no surprise that 21% of the participants agreed that hawkers are completely unacceptable for a first date. So perhaps it may be smart to save this one for later? Yet, it’s nice that most wouldn’t think any less of you for suggesting a hawker centre for a first date.
What’s also interesting is that men (25%) are 2.5 times more likely than women (10%) to view their potential partner in a favourable light if they suggest going to a hawker centre for a first date. We suppose it comes down to women placing more importance on ambience while men tend to prioritise practicality. At the same time, women could also view the effort put into dates as a reflection of how much they value her.
Earlier this year, a video of a girl shaming a man for suggesting they go to Lau Pa Sat for their first date went viral. While she was criticised for bringing her concerns to social media, most of the comments agreed that it shows a lack of effort.
At the end of the day…
If you want to ask her on a hawker date, you should probably just go for it. Like most things when it comes to dating, there is no hard and fast rule. Some people will appreciate the simplicity, while others may be apprehensive about the lack of effort. It completely boils down to personal preferences and we suppose first-date food choices can be a testament to a couple’s compatibility.
How to impress a Singapore foodie
1. Be adventurous and explore hidden gems
Singapore’s culinary scene is a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Venture beyond the usual spots and explore neighbourhoods like Joo Chiat and Tiong Bahru. These areas are bursting with local eateries and cafes that serve up delicious dishes you won’t find anywhere else. Being open to new experiences also shows that you’re adventurous and ready to share exciting moments.
2. Know your hawker centres
While a hawker centre might not be your top choice for a first date, it’s undeniable that you’ll be enjoying many meals there down the road. From laksa to char kway teow, each dish has its own distinct flavour. Know what sets them apart so you can not just discuss them but also show your respect for the various local cuisines.
3. Explore different food festivals
Events like Artbox and the Geylang Bazaar offer vibrant atmospheres and a chance to try everything from trendy snacks to traditional delicacies. These festivals are not only fun but also a great way to experience local food culture.
4. Food etiquette
Proper food etiquette can make or break a dining experience. Brush up on how to use your chopsticks correctly and be comfortable eating with your hands when necessary. For dishes like Roti John or Chili Crab, being okay with getting a little messy shows you’re down-to-earth and truly appreciate the cuisine.
5. Cook for them
Nothing says you care like a homemade meal. Cooking for your foodie partner can be a deeply personal and heartfelt gesture. Show off your skills in the kitchen and whip up some of their favourite dishes.
6. Cook with them
For a fun and interactive date, try cooking together. It’s a fantastic bonding activity that lets you both get hands-on in the kitchen. From rolling sushi to making pasta from scratch, cooking together is not only enjoyable but also a great way to connect and create something delicious.
