Luo Xiaojing and Nicholas Chen, both 32, fused their retro reception with hi-tech effects. She tells us:

“Instead of the conventional Chinese banquet, we chose Fullerton Bay Hotel’s Clifford restaurant because we knew the name would bring back fond memories for older guests who remembered Clifford Pier.

We also wanted a small, memorable affair for family and friends that allowed us to spend more time mingling, so the cosy French-brasserie ambience was perfect. Guests sat at tables of four, six and eight – and enjoyed really good European dishes.

xiaojing3.jpgThe couple’s invites and decorations were a mix of contemporary, retro and traditional elements.

As we grew up in the 1980s and ’90s, we had elements from that era such as a camper van and matchbox-like invites. Most of the decorations were bought during holidays or made by us. Our hongbao box had a red letterbox design similar to the ones in Hong Kong, where we spent our first holiday together.

xiaojing.jpgThe couple’s vows were inspired by some of the lessons from the movie Forrest Gump.

We sent guests a link to our Google Docs page to select their dinner. Nicholas also did up a QR code for every table. Guests who scanned their smart devices received a personal message from us. We also set up a live Instagram feed, so they could hashtag us, and have their photos show on screen.

My top tip: Host a reception that truly means something to you and go for a theme that you are most comfortable with.”
