They first met at a gathering, but didn’t go on their first date until much later because of Pei Li’s busy schedule. After discovering common interests, like running, they grew even closer when Symond, a marathoner of 12 years, started training her for a half-marathon.

Witty signs for his and hers chairs had guests laughing.

“We wanted a unique celebration and decided on Halia at Raffles Hotel. We fell in love with its colonial vibe, which reminded us of our own black and white bungalow.

One of the challenges we faced, was having to shortlist our guests to 120, including 20 children, as Halia is small. It was one of the hardest things to do.

The wedding took place on Symond’s birthday. We joked that perhaps this would make it easier for him to remember our anniversary. Afterwards, we’d planned an after-party for about 15 guests, but 30 joined us! It was a great way to wrap up the festivities.”

“We both ran the September 2013 Berlin Marathon. Symond got down on one knee and popped the question at the end of the run,” says Pei Li.
