From The Straits Times    |

How did you meet?

“We met in 2007, at junior college. Michelle and I were paired up to participate in the Pre-university Seminar. She was the brains of the team, and I did the talking.

This arrangement has worked ever since!”

What was your proposal like?

“I proposed at home the morning after Michelle came back from a trip.

She was completely jet-lagged, so my opening words were “I’ll let you go back to sleep if you say yes” – an offer she couldn’t refuse.

We had been dating for nearly a decade by then, and the proposal reflected how comfortable we had become with each other.”

“The wedding was intimate, a way of thanking our guests for taking the time and effort to celebrate with us.

We started the big day after lunch so that everyone could sleep in.

The solemnisation took place just before dinner, followed by drinks at the top of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, where our overseas guests could take in the Singapore skyline.

The venue decor was based on the blue hydrangea, Michelle’s favourite flower.

Fortunately, the ambience of the wedding venue readily complemented this theme.”

“When we were asked during the solemnisation who had brought us here together, we mistakenly answered “the wedding planners”.

That nearly caught the Justice of the Peace off-guard! Thankfully, he was unfazed, and proceeded to solemnise our marriage.”

“‘I promise to be a true and loyal friend’ was our very first commitment to each other.”

“We wanted as many people to enjoy the flowers as possible, and arranged for them to be repurposed, and distributed by Bloomback – a social enterprise – to health-care facilities.”

Any post-wedding thoughts?

“Going through the big day together, minor hiccups and all, was meaningful for us, the same way roller coasters are more fun because of the ups and downs.

Facing our nearest and dearest with Michelle by my side was the most memorable part of the dinner, followed by accidentally lobbing a champagne cork at our friend.

After the wedding, we looked forward to sleeping for two consecutive nights!”
