For mountains: Kaikoura

With the Pacific Ocean and vast mountains as its backdrop, Kaikoura is a gorgeous place for your wedding portraits. If you’re there on your honeymoon, it is a great place for whale-watching as Kaikoura is known for its wildlife – such as dolphins, whales, seals, albatross and more.

Tip: Go for early morning boat trips for the calmest oceans and dramatic sunrises for beautiful shots.

For thermal pools: Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

For dramatic backdrops, this volcanic area at Rotarua (North Island) has bubbling mud pools, interesting forest walkways leading to thermal pools, and even a champagne pool!

For the perfect beach shot: Abel Tasman

New Zealand’s only coastal national park, Abel Tasman, has golden sand and crystal clear waters – with dense tree lined tracks that provide the perfect backdrop.

If you’re on your honeymoon, enjoy walking the picturesque Abel Tasman Coastal Track and talk a dip in one of Abel Tasman’s alluring bays.

For the hills: Catlins Coast

For miles and miles of green rolling hills and unpopulated surf beaches, try having your wedding portraits taken at Catlins Coast- located on the south coast of the South Island. This scenic coastal landscape makes a beautiful backdrop for wedding portraits!

For lakes: Lake Tekapo

Despite being one of the most famous and popular tourist attractions in New Zealand, Lake Tekapo still boasts undisturbed natural beauty. With a remarkable turquoise coloured lake and the mountainous drama of the Southern Alps, the results of your photoshoot will be breathtaking!

For underground caves: Glow worm caves

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves, on the North Island of New Zealand, is known for its population of glow worms only found in New Zealand. While you can’t shoot here, it is a good activity to include in your honeymoon itinerary.

For the movie buff: Hobbiton

Just outside the small town of Matamata, here is a place fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies will love. Have your wedding portraits taken at the actual Hobbiton set – your photos will look like a dream!
