Get that dream engagement ring you want! 5 ways how

Short of actually going ring shopping with him, here's how you can nudge him in the right direction when it comes to getting your engagement ring.

You want it to a be a surprise, but you're worried you might end up with a ring design you aren't entirely crazy about. If there are signs he's about to pop the question, here are some tips to help get your preferences across, short of actually going ring shopping together.

#1 Ask for a surprise

If he's asked or if you've already had the proposal talk, and you'd prefer a surprise, give him vague details like the stones you prefer and cuts, as well as what you don't like - just to be safe! Then leave the rest up to him.

#2 Send him a Pinterest board

If you have no qualms about being direct with your man, drop a big hint with a Pinterest board. "When I knew my partner was going to propose, I made sure he knew what I wanted by sending him a Pinterest board with styles and cuts I liked. Thankfully, he used that as a reference when he went to the jeweller's. Long story short: I absolutely love the ring! It's an emerald-cut halo design, and better than I expected it to be. I am relieved I was proactive in communicating my dream design - I was told that I might have gotten a regular round-cut solitaire if I didn't show him what I really wanted. :P," bride-to-be Felicia Tan, 29, says.

#3 Keep it cool and casual

When you're out shopping, stroll past the jewellery store's display "just to have a look" and make a casual remark about what you like and don't. He's sure to be jotting down mental notes!

#4 Have a friend or family member drop hints

Rope in a close mutual friend (or if you're tight with his buddy) or a family member to help, especially if you know you can trust them to choose a style you'd like. Also communicate your preferred styles, just in case. Many guys are traditionalists at heart and still want the ring to be a surprise. One thing you shouldn't be doing: Pressuring him into talking to your friends and family.

#5 The celebrity/friend commentary

Came across a celeb engagement and ring on the news or Instagram? Or did your friend recently get proposed to? Put out a few hints if your SO is with you: "Look at Emily's ring. That marquise cut diamond (Yes, be specific about the cut or shape, too) is really nice!"
