Growing up, we’re constantly surrounded by the notion (thanks to fairytales and Disney cartoons) that happy endings are a given, especially when the two leads get married at the end of the show.

The reality is, happy endings are hard work. They don’t just fall into your lap. According to researcher, psychology professor emeritus and writer John Gottman (see also the four factors that will kill your relationship), there were two types: the masters and disasters. The former were calm, connected and less ready to attack as opposed to the latter.

In conclusion, this much was clear: couples who expressed kindness and genorisity within their relationships were more likely to enjoy happier, lasting unions than those who didn’t.
