Whether you’re a groom or a guest, one thing’s for sure: you’ll have to follow the dresscode stated on the wedding invitation. Chances are, unless it’s a beach wedding (even then, you can’t really turn up in a t-shirt and berms, can you), or a really casual party, you’ll need to dress accordingly. And, if you’re stumped between terms such as black tie, tuxedo jacket and morning coat, grab your pen and take notes, for we’re about to take a closer look at each ensemble.

Three-piece tuxedo suit by Dolce & Gabbana

BLACK TIE: TUXEDO
A black tie wedding is deliciously simple for the fellas. It’s as easy as picking a sharp tuxedo jacket and pants (this one from Dolce & Gabbana for $3,225 or S$4,375, will do the trick), a crisp white dress shirt and a pair of black dress shoes. This season don’t worry about a cummerbund, they look fussy and the latest trend is for clean lines (no frilly dress shirts either).
Pair with: a black bow tie. No clip-ons.

Black wool morning coat by Gieves & Hawkes

DAYTIME FORMAL: MORNING SUIT
If you’re set on having a formal wedding ceremony or reception in the day, the morning suit is your best bet. The six-piece ensemble comprises a morning coat (with tails), waist coat, striped or checked trousers, a shirt, a handkerchief or pocket square, and black Oxford shoes or dress boots. Lighter-coloured morning suits are considered less formal. Gieves & Hawkes on Savile Row have set the standard when it comes to formalwear for many a generation, and their classic black morning coat, priced at £600 (S$1,256) will see you through many a wedding (as groom, groomsman or guest).
Pair with: a standard silk tie and a pale blue or pale yellow waistcoat for a modern touch.

INFORMAL: DARK SUIT
A navy blue or gray suit is an undeniably classic option if you’re looking to keep it low-key at an informal occasion, yet still look sharp in the photos. This slim-cut model from Parisian brand De Fursac is currently available for €444.50 (S$676). Keep things modern and on-trend: there’s no need to wear a tie if you don’t want to, a white or pale blue or salmon pink shirt will do perfectly.
Pair with: an open collar or a tie and pocket square.

BEACH: LIGHT SUIT OR BLAZER
For spring and summer weddings, especially those taking place in warmer climes, a light-colored suit or blazer can be an excellent choice. This light blue blazer from H&M, priced at $59.95 (S$81), can be paired with matching trousers or a white pair of pressed pants. Worn with a pair of tailored shorts, it’s perfect for a beach wedding.
