There’s nothing wrong with your groom getting suited up in something from a mass-market retailer for your wedding day.

Like our guide on how you can make your wedding gown look expensive, we have a few tricks up the sleeve when it comes to making an off-the-rack suit look bespoke.

1. Go monochromatic or dark

Apart from avoiding shiny looking suits made of synthetic fibers, sticking to a monochromatic palette for the rest of your attire (shirt, shoes, tie etc) will have your suit looking more put together.

If you like some variety and colour, you can include some texture and patterns in your pocket square, tie and even socks for a touch of modern styling.

2. Change the buttons

If the suit comes with cheap plastic buttons that does nothing to elevate the look, have them replaced with either matte or shiny horn buttons.

Small details like these can make a huge difference.

3. Tweak the sleeves

One obvious giveaway of an ill-fitting suit is how the sleeves are hanging off your arms. Ideally, you should have narrow, tapered sleeves that hugs your arms naturally while allowing you the ease of motion.

They shouldn’t be hanging off your arms either. As a general guide, a half-inch of your shirt cuff should be visible beyond the jacket cuff.

Fortunately these are all easy adjustments to make so it’s easy to get them right at the tailor!

4. Shoes maketh man

A cheap-looking pair of shoes can ruin your whole look, no matter how good your suit looks. Shoes matter.

So pick a solid pair of leather Oxfords, derby shoes or loafers and be sure to give them a good polish.  And of course, be sure your sock game is strong too.

Other shoe options like boots or sneakers are fine as well in certain materials if you’re having a more casual, off-beat celebration. Be sure they don’t look too scuffed up though!
