If you haven't already watched the romantic comedy that is Crazy Rich Asians, there is that now iconic wedding scene that has bride Araminta Lee (played by Sonoya Mizuno) walking down a water-filled aisle while dressed in a spectacular wedding gown.
Malaysian designer Carven Ong was tapped on by the show's costume designer Mary Vogt to create that showstopping wedding dress (except, it isn't really a dress) in glittering gold and pink with dramatic tiered skirts and layers of gathered tulle as well as a cascading waterfall hem. And it is every part as fairy tale-esque as you can picture it to be.
The evening and bridal designer, whose creations are carried in major departmental stores in Malaysia, is known in the country for his elegant and poised creations said (as told to AsiaOne): "I'm honoured and surprised by this great opportunity given to me to execute the vision and inspiration by the costume designers. It was a golden moment for me to introduce my work to the world."
He points out that this is part of the change that sees more Asian designers altering the game in the once Western brand-dominated Hollywood movie industry.
"With the growing success of Asian designers conquering the world stage such as Alexander Wang, Thakoon and Rei Kawakubo. I am pleased that our Eastern representation in fashion satiates the taste of the evergrowing globalisation."
And if you want your wedding dress made by Ong? His atelier's just right across the border in Kuala Lumpur. Below are some of our favourite bridal and evening looks we've gleaned from his Instagram page.
