Los Angeles-based Fly Entertainment artiste Elizabeth Lazan, 31, and Californian-born glass artist and designer Ivan Lee Mora, 36, got married in California. She tells us:

“We met at a New York house party hosted by my actor friend from school. I was leaving when Ivan approached me. We got along really well, and I thought he was really cute and charming. We started out as friends, explored New York City together, made lots of road trips, and fell in love along the way.

We wanted a wedding that reflected both our origins, especially since guests were coming from all over. I incorporated my Chinese heritage from Dad’s side (Mum’s Italian-English) by having the bridesmaids wear orchid headbands and carry Chinese-inspired paper umbrellas. And I shipped in chocolate Pocky, my favourite childhood snack, for the dessert table.

We had our ceremony and dinner on the first day, and a quieter, more casual celebration the next. During the dinner party, I took over the drums for a bit in my wedding dress. My maid of honour grabbed the mic. Such a blast! We felt like rock stars and everyone was dancing. The next day, we had a relaxed afternoon on the beach. There was food, drinks, picnic mats and games to play like badminton, volleyball and Frisbee.

We exchanged vows with the breathtaking Pacific Ocean in front of us. Ivan recited a touching poem from The Last Unicorn, his favourite movie.”

THE BRIDE’S TOP TIPS
1. Just so they understand your vision, make big decisions with vendors for a long-distance wedding in person instead of via Skype or phone,

2. Send save the dates to guests early, so they have time to make travel plans, budget and pack. Also keep them updated on details like accommodation.

3. Arrange activities for overseas guests, and make them feel at home as much as possible.

4. If you’re marrying overseas, research the country’s marriage laws and cultural traditions.
