It is always a visual feast at Gucci – this season was no exception. At first glance, the eighties feel from the Spring/Summer 18′ collection was immediate; maximalist exaggerated shoulders, jogger suits made un-dowdy, and homages to Elton John and his costumer,  Bob Mackie. Pop culture references ran aplenty; collaborations with Disney and Warner Bros. Studios (Alessandro Michele loves his cartoons) and SEGA-inspired fonts were seen left, right and centre. It’s an affair fit for all magpies and maximalists at heart; the sequins, rhinestones and ornate prints make the case for a truly nostalgic showcase which ressurected the 80s’ in the most glamorous way possible. Albeit difficult to cull, we’ve managed to pick out some of our favourite details and looks from the collection.

1. Tracksuit with SEGA-inspired logo

The athleisure trend is still going strong, but that’s not why we love this tracksuit. With the reference to Sega for its logo and its ’80s-inspired design (without the embellishments, we can see it being somebody’s granddad’s and listed on eBay), its vintage appeal is the main draw.

2. Ice skating-inspired bodysuit with embellishments

Most of us might never become professional ice skaters, but now we can dress like one – trip to the rink not necessary. Gucci’s ice skating-inspired bodysuit is generously studded with blinding rhinestones but yet surprisingly wearable. Style it with a tulle dress for special events like how the Italian brand does it or wear it with mom jeans for a night out.

3. Collaborations with Disney and Warner Bros. Studios

Gucci’s collabs with Disney and Warner Brothers have resulted in a Snow White sweater and a Bugs Bunny vest, and that these two are actually from the men’s collection has not prevented us from noticing how adorable they look, and how great they would look on us too.

4. The Ophidia bags

If you have read the December issue of our magazine, you’d know why we think the Ophidias from Gucci’s Cruise 2018 would be the next most-wanted bags – these ’60s-meets-’70s shoulder bags and crossbody bags are understated, but possess a lasting appeal. For Spring 2018, the brand has released new top handle versions of the Ophidia and we want them as much as the originals.

5. Rings with animal head motifs

Accessorising is easy with rings. Go with one or two thin bands for everyday wear, and bring out the ostentatious ones like these animal head rings from Gucci on days when you are feeling for something more over-the-top than your usual pick of minimalist sterling silver. The new motif for SS18 is the rabbit – very Alice in Wonderland.
