Singaporean couturier Goh Lai Chan’s eponymous label never fails to disappoint on the beauty front. The veteran designer kicked off Singapore Fashion Week with his theatrical and ornate pieces. The beauty looks for the show were just as bold and classy as the pieces that went down the runway. We went backstage with NARS Global Makeup Artist, Jenny Smith, to find out how to recreate the look.

While big and bushy brows are going nowhere fast, their bleached counterpart stole the show at last night’s runway. To counteract the dark red lip, the brows were blanked out and eyes were left bare. The flawless skin and pin straight hair added to the wow factor and enhanced the ethereal and eclectic beauty of the beautiful pieces. Read on to find out how to get the look. Step 1: Blanked out brows

Flatten those brows by applying a layer of glue (yes, non-toxic craft glue to be precise) with a spatula and smooth over. Next, dust some translucent powder that wouldn’t oxidise and turn darker. Jenny used the Soft Velvet Loose Powder by NARS. Top it all off with a full coverage concealer like the NARS Soft Matte Cream Concealer (S$46) that will stick between all of your brow hairs. Repeat this process until you’ve achieved the desired effect. If your brows start to get chunky, spritz some facial mist to break it down. Jenny used the Soft Velvet Loose Powder by NARS.

Pro tip: Aside from creating the “no eyebrow” look, you can also use craft glue to keep unruly brows in place.

Step 2: Flawless yet au natural face

The blanked out brow leaves the face more exposed. That is why it is crucial to conceal all the imperfections on the face with a full coverage yet natural looking foundation. She used the Natural Radiant Long-Wear Foundation (new for spring 2018, for now use the Sheer Glow Foundation by NARS, S$76 that also does the job). For a radiant second-skin finish, Jenny recommends using “your fingertips to blend out the foundation for a more natural look”.

With the same Soft Matte Concealer, apply concealer on your eyelids to balance out the colour and use the remaining concealer on your brush to cover your blemishes.

Pro tip: When shopping for foundations, apply a swipe of the shade you think is the closest to your skin on the centre of your face because that is where you will need the most coverage. The right shade should blend seamlessly and disappear into your skin.

Step 3: Dark red “painted on” lips

Before starting on your lip makeup, it’s a good idea to prep your lips with a lip balm.  The Rosebud Salve lip balm (US$6) is great for chapped and dry lips. With a red lip liner, the NARS Precision Lip Liner in Mariachi (S$36), outline your lips following the natural shape of your lips before filling in the entire lip with the same lip liner. With a lip liner slightly darker than the first lip liner used, NARS Ride It ($36), apply it over your entire lips. For that painted on lip effect, go over your lips with a velvet matte lip pencil, Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Endanger Red (S$38) and a lip brush to get a nice creamy finish. Using the same heavy duty concealer and concealer brush, clean up the colour on the edges around your lips to achieve a more defined pucker.

Pro tip: If you’re using lip balm, wipe off your lip balm before moving on to your lip makeup so it’ll last longer. Also, to prevent your lip makeup from bleeding, dust loose powder around the edges with a small fluffy brush to help everything stay in place.
