Why is hyaluronic acid so popular in skincare products?
Get your dose of hyaluronic acid and reap the benefits

Hyaluronic acid has been a mainstay skincare ingredient in recent years and is often touted as a ‘miracle ingredient’ because of its numerous benefits. But how much do we actually know about this ingredient and how does it actually help our skin?
Dr Rachel Ho, medical director at La Clinic, describes hyaluronic acid as a large sugar molecule that is made up of smaller sugar units.
“These sugar units are repeated many – even thousands of – times to create a large molecule,” she adds. “Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in our body, in organs like joints, eyes and skin. In the skin, the majority of it lies in the dermis (the inner layer of skin).”
Hyaluronic acid is used in skincare mainly to provide moisturising benefits and this is because it’s a humectant – a substance that retains moisture. Due to this ability to attract water, hyaluronic acid is commonly found in moisturisers, hydrating serums and masks, says Dr Ho.
It’s such a popular skincare ingredient because of its many benefits. Dr Ho reveals that hyaluronic acid moisturises the skin and has anti-aging benefits, even at a concentration of 0.1%.
“As a skincare ingredient, hyaluronic acid is also suitable for most skin types including people who have oily skin and acne,” she says. “Hyaluronic acid also pairs well with other active ingredients such as ceramides, exfoliating acids and retinoids.”
Plus, it’s a safe ingredient that is naturally broken down by the body. This, coupled with its remarkable ability to hold on to water molecules are reasons why hyaluronic acid is commonly used in skincare, injectable moisturisers and dermal fillers, says Dr Ho.
There are various ways to incorporate hyaluronic acid in our skincare routine. Dr Ho advises to choose hyaluronic acid products with a mix of molecular weights.
“Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid can penetrate significantly deeper into the skin than high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, to provide better skin hydration and anti-wrinkle effects,” she explains. “Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid also penetrates the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis) to protect and support epidermal hydration.
“High molecular weight hyaluronic acid acts like a film to hydrate the top layer of the skin. High molecular weight hyaluronic acid also has anti-inflammatory benefits,” she adds.
Dr Ho also suggests to pair hyaluronic acid with emollients (moisturiser that softens skin) and occlusives (seals in moisturiser), especially for women with dry skin as this will further improve the moisture barrier. Hyaluronic acid is a hydrophilic ingredient (ie. it tends to be dissolved by water), so layer oil based products on top of it.
One of the biggest benefits of hyaluronic acid is that it’s suitable for most skin types, including users with normal to oily skin. Also, there are no known contraindications to using this ingredients, except for allergies.
But, is there such a thing as getting too much hyaluronic acid? “There is a popular belief that using too much hyaluronic acid may cause water loss from the skin, but this belief is not backed by evidence,” says Dr Ho.
