National Day is just around the corner. While many of us plan to gather and commemorate with our friends and family, fashion labels are celebrating our nation’s 55th birthday with special collaborations.

Similar to its collab last year with street graffiti artist Sam Lo (@skl0_), Japanese watch label G-shock has worked with another local artist to release a limited, Singapore edition timepiece. This year, local illustrator and visual artist Adeline Yeo (@mightyellow) was chosen. She takes inspiration from our Garden City and translates it onto the brand’s latest GA-140 model.

Adeline tells us about her inspiration and some of the challenges she faced when designing watches.

Why did you choose Singapore’s Garden City as the inspiration for this collab?

“As we are a densely populated city, it isn’t easy to allocate space and resources to maintain nature. Most of my work is inspired by nature, and to have that somewhat accessible in the place where I live is something that I treasure.”

Why the darker colour scheme?

“People expect soft pinks and delicate flowers when it comes to 'flora and fauna'. But, our jungles are beautiful too – they are an explosion of earthy greens, muddy yellows and bright reds. It is a colour scheme that I rarely get to explore, and this was the right opportunity for a [G-Shock] product that represents toughness.”

“Wear it with lots of personality!”

How long did it take for you to conceptualise and get to the final design?

“Conceptualising was rather quick because it was something I’d wanted to try, but didn’t get the opportunity to. The process, from sketching to production, took a few months.”

What are some challenges you faced when it comes to designing a watch?

“It is the same with any 3-D surface – small uneven areas etc. For instance, I like details but that is subjected to print limitations. Hence, the challenge for me is retaining enough details and integrity of the design, while making it simple enough to be executed.”

The G-Shock x Mightyellow limited edition timepiece is available at all G-Shock outlets (except its IMM boutique) for $219.
