We all know how Nineties fashion has been dominating the trend scape for many seasons, but the pencil skirt is one item that did not generate as much popularity as other must-haves from the era, such as the mini skirt, slip dress or low-rise bottoms. Often associated unfavourably with 'corporate office attire', the pencil skirt is finally having its moment.
Since appearing in the Fall 2023 runway shows, it is now trickling into the Resort 2024 season. Johanna Ortiz, Carolina Herrera and Coach are just some brands that have given it a new lease of life. Metallic versions seem to be one of the more popular iterations seen at Johanna Ortiz, Diesel and Christopher Kane, who pushed the envelope further with a furtrimmed version. Combining two ‘90s trends together, Korean-born, London-based designer Eudon Choi experimented with a low-waist style. On the other hand, for something more feminine and grown-up, Carolina Herrera’s crochet pencil skirt presents the perfect fit.
Another testament to the pencil skirt's rebranding is evident in how creative director Stuart Vevers approached it in Coach's PreSpring collection, collaborating with Coach ambassador Lil’ Nas X for a capsule collection named The Lil Nas X Drop. The result is a younger Gen-Z approved version of the pencil skirt (in leather, no less) that is styled with the brand’s signature oversized leather jacket, complete with a T-shirt, beanie and shoulder bag.
