It can be dizzying trying to figure out where to spend — and where to save — when it comes to beauty, whether you’re shopping for products or booking treatments.

While a hefty price tag doesn’t always mean a product is better, there are certain beauty investments that can genuinely make a difference. From a hardworking, do-it-all foundation that lasts all day to a targeted treatment backed by years of research and development, these are the things I’m willing to spend a little more on.

1. Reparative, targeted treatments

Science-backed formulas that have undergone rigorous testing and years of research and development inevitably come at a higher price point. But when you’re investing in a product designed to address a specific skin concern, I think that’s where the extra spend can be justified.

Rather than buying multiple products that promise to do a little bit of everything, I’d rather invest in one well-formulated treatment that does one job exceptionally well.

One tried-and-tested formula is the Shiseido Ultimune Power Infusing Serum, which was first introduced more than a decade ago and has since become a skincare staple. Its latest iteration features power fermented camellia+ and is formulated to strengthen the skin and address concerns associated with visible signs of ageing.

Another staple in my rotation is the Clé de Peau Beauté Brightening Serum Supreme, which has been reformulated with luminous algae extract, a rare seaweed extract, and 4MSK, a concentrated ingredient that helps reduce the appearance of dark spots and even out skin tone.

2. A buildable foundation

To me, a one-and-done, medium-to-high coverage foundation is the makeup equivalent of a white T-shirt in your wardrobe. It should even out the complexion and blur imperfections while remaining lightweight, comfortable and breathable enough for everyday wear — but also be buildable enough for occasions when you need more coverage, whether that’s a big presentation or an evening event.

Look for formulas such as the Clarins Double Serum Foundation, a hybrid serum foundation with a dual-phase chamber that dispenses equal parts pigment and skincare ingredients. It delivers a glowy finish and comfortable feel while still providing coverage and long wear.

The Nars Natural Matte Longwear Foundation is another good option. It helps mattify excess shine with its pore-refining trio technology, while maintaining a second-skin feel and long-lasting coverage.

There are plenty of good, affordable foundation alternatives out there. But because you typically need no more than two pumps per application, a pricier foundation can actually have a relatively low cost per use. #girlmath

3. A hot tool that’s kinder to your hair

I can’t deny that a cheap-and-cheerful straightener or curling iron can help you achieve your desired look, particularly when used correctly. But if you’re regularly relying on hot tools, I think it’s worth investing in one with intelligent heat control and technology designed to minimise unnecessary stress on the hair, such as the GHD Glide+ Max Paddle Hot Brush, which is designed for thick and long hair. It helps to tame your strands in one sweep while maintaining an optimum styling temperature of 185°C.

I’m also a fan of multi-tasking hot tools that can shave time and steps off your routine. The new Dyson Airsmooth, for example, can dry, smooth and lift hair in one go. It uses anti-snag bristles to diffuse and control high-pressure airflow, helping to minimise frizz and hair disturbance while styling. It also features intelligent heat control that measures temperature 100 times a second.

4. Monthly facials

Stress shows on our skin, and I think taking an hour or so each month to properly switch off is a beauty investment in itself.

You don’t necessarily need an elaborate treatment. Lunchtime express facials can be great for the basics, such as deep cleansing and hydration. Personally, though, I love a sensorial, hands-heavy massage that helps release tension from the face, neck and shoulders.

Hanbang Beauty’s signature geunmak Korean facial massage, for example, incorporates targeted massage movements around the shoulders, neck and jawline to help release tension and promote circulation.

5. A scent that makes you feel confident

You can’t put a price on that.

Fragrance is deeply subjective, and different notes and compositions can evoke completely different emotions. If there’s an under $50 scent you love, wonderful. But if there’s a luxury or niche fragrance you’ve been eyeing for months, I say go for it.

After all, fragrance is one of the easiest ways to express your personality, and wearing a scent you genuinely love can be an instant confidence boost.

A recent favourite of mine is Jean Paul Gaultier La Belle Rosea, an uplifting floral fragrance with aquatic notes, peony and vanilla. Chanel Coco Mademoiselle is another easy-to-wear favourite: exuberant and bright, with citrus, grapefruit and lychee leading into a heart of rose and jasmine, before settling into patchouli, vanilla and vetiver.
