Lash extensions are always a hit or miss. Some like it because it helps to accentuate their eyes and the convenience of skipping mascara in the morning, while others dislike how unnatural they can feel (and sometimes look a bit too dramatic for their taste).

For someone like me who has been doing lash extensions for the past five to six years, it feels weird not having my lash extensions on, considering that I’ve been heavily dependent on them. Not only does it save a lot of time getting ready in the morning, but it also makes me look put together even on days when I don’t have any makeup on.

However, the downside of traditional lash extensions is that the glue may tend to itch because of the formula used in the cyanoacrylate-based adhesive. This causes redness, irritation, or allergic reactions and it’s a pain, especially for those with sensitive skin like me.

By the third or fourth week, as my lashes begin to shed, I start feeling itchiness around my eyes, and it can even sting a little. While you’re not supposed to rub your eyes excessively with your lash extensions on, the feeling is uncomfortable and eventually, you’ll find yourself pulling your lashes (out of habit) or just rubbing them to ease the irritation.

Having tried alternative methods such as false eyelashes and glue-free lashes that are now all over TikTok, I recently discovered LED lash extensions. While it may be similar to traditional lash extensions, LED lash extensions, in this case, make use of LED light technology with a specially formulated adhesive and it uses an LED-sensitive adhesive that cures instantly when exposed to LED light.

While not all lash studios offer LED lash extensions, I managed to find Perky Lash, a local business founded by Jasmin Tay that offers the service and I knew I had to give it a shot.

Here, the application process for LED lash extensions uses a special LED-sensitive adhesive that cures instantly under LED light, making it faster and gentler than traditional methods. To protect your lids, a black protective patch is specifically designed to shield your eyes during the LED process. This ensures your eyes remain completely safe and comfortable, with no impact on the skin around the eye area.

Benefits of LED lash extensions

According to Jasmin, founder of Perky Lash, she reveals some of the benefits of LED lashes. “First, the application process is faster because the adhesive cures instantly under LED light, significantly reducing overall application time. Additionally, this advanced technology minimises glue fumes, making it a more comfortable experience for clients and reducing sensitivity issues,” she explains.

She adds, “Another major advantage is that there’s no downtime—clients can wash their face or swim immediately after the session, unlike traditional lash extensions that require a waiting period. This makes LED lash extensions a safer, faster, and more convenient option for everyone, especially those with sensitive eyes.”

While traditional extensions tend to last three to six weeks, LED lashes, on the other hand, tend to last longer, typically 6 to 8 weeks. The process is also a lot more gentle on sensitive eyes as it produces fewer fumes and provides a more convenient, comfortable, and durable solution.

Jasmin also mentions, “LED lash extensions are also ideal for people who work out or sweat a lot, as they tend to be more durable than traditional lash extensions. With their long-lasting bond, LED lashes are less likely to get damaged or lose their shape, even with sweat or intense physical activity.”

“Other than that, they’re perfect for people going on long holiday trips. Their durability and long-lasting nature make them a reliable option for travellers who want to maintain a polished look without frequent touch-ups,” she continues.

Removing the lashes is similar to traditional lash extensions. In fact, it uses a gentle, professional removal solution that safely dissolves the adhesive, allowing the lashes to be removed without damaging your natural lashes.

Myths or misconceptions about LED lash extensions

LED lash extensions are still pretty new in Singapore, so it’s no surprise that some people might have doubts about them. If you’ve been curious but hesitant, here are a couple of common myths—debunked.

Is LED light the same as UV light?

No, LED light does not emit harmful UV rays. Unlike UV light, which can penetrate deeper into the skin and cause long-term damage, LED light operates at a different wavelength, targeting only the adhesive during the lash extension process. This makes it completely safe for both your eyes and skin—no risk of damage from prolonged exposure.

Does it cause discomfort?

The process is actually very gentle. The LED light works by curing the adhesive quickly and safely, without emitting any harmful radiation or fumes. According to Jasmin, she says, “You might feel a slight warmth during the application as the adhesive sets, but this is completely normal and harmless. The process is designed to be safe, comfortable, and more efficient than traditional lash extensions.”

Personal experience

During my session at Perky Lash, I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the entire experience was. The application took about two hours—similar to traditional lash extensions—but that’s mainly because I have a lot of natural lashes to work with.

Now, after three and a half weeks, I’ve noticed minimal fallout, and my lashes still look incredibly thick. They don’t feel heavy on my lids, and best of all, there’s no stinging or irritation—something I’m really pleased about. That said, it’s worth noting that LED lash extensions are on the pricier side (starting from $138) due to the advanced technology involved. The LED curing system and specialized adhesive require high-quality materials and equipment, which naturally drives up the cost.

That being said, considering the comfort, longevity, and overall experience, I’d definitely go back for another session. For me, it’s well worth the investment.
