The skin around our eyes is thinner than most other parts of our face. Additionally, with fewer sebaceous glands in this area, some of us may find our eyes a little dry and in need of hydration.

Just like the rest of our skin, the eye area is also susceptible to ultraviolet rays and other harmful elements, explains Dr Rachel Ho, medical director of La Clinic. All these are reasons as to why it is important for us to take good care of our peepers.

While there are no guidelines as to when we should start using age-defying skincare for the face, Dr Rachel recommends starting as early as in our 20s. That’s because “signs of ageing around the eyes – like wrinkles and dark spots – can appear from our mid 20s.”

“The skin around the eyes is very delicate so look for lower concentrations of active ingredients such as retinoids and acids that may cause irritation,” adds Dr Ho.

If you wish to brighten the eye area and minimise dark spots, shel suggests trying out formulas that contain ingredients such as vitamin C, caffeine and niacinamide. To target dryness and fine lines, consider hyaluronic acid, beta glucagon and panthenol.

When it comes to the application of products, one should avoid rubbing on any product. Instead, gently pat it on the skin and go easy on the amount of product that you use. She cautions against using too much product on the eye area. “Apply only a thin layer as some of us are prone to developing milia seeds.”
