It’s yet another lunar new year – while some are ready with their OOTDs and raring to go, others might be anxious about braving the crowds in their last-ditch attempt to get new clothes. Don’t fret, you can use these tips to still welcome the Year of the Rooster in style:
1. Work with existing pieces
Very often, we forget we have a new skirt or blouse still sitting in our wardrobe because we keep telling ourselves we’ll match it with something, somehow. Now is a good time to make that happen. Look through your clothes and pair up your new items – you’ll be surprised at the many possibilities. Since it’s the new year, what better time to commit to maximising your wardrobe? And you’ll feel great knowing you didn’t spend extra money this time.
2. Don’t just look at CNY collections
When you’re shopping online, don’t restrict yourself to the CNY collections – chances are, they have run out of sizes and you’ll be disappointed (over and over again). Instead, look for pieces in festive colours and prints. You can even venture into collections you don’t usually consider, like bridesmaids and white tie, to get statement pieces.
3. Have a pre-idea of what you want to wear
Usually, when you shop with just the idea of ‘looking for CNY clothes’ under a time crunch, nothing seems to work out. It’s better to go in having a game plan. Have a rough idea of what you want to wear, whether it’s an off-shoulder top or a lace number. Then search the items online to see which stores have the available size, and go straight to the malls that house these brands. Sometimes it pays to make a trip down to try the clothes, if you’re worried about getting the right size online or can’t squeeze the time to do returns.
4. Accessorise
If all else fails, you can always count on statement accessories to instantly glam up your look. They are a wonderful distraction from that outfit you’re not super confident about, or that cheongsam you wore two years back.
