For the uninitiated, Chanel’s Metiers d’Art collection is an initiative that’s unique to the French house. First introduced into the brand’s lexicon in 2002 by the late Chanel guardian Karl Lagerfeld, think of the annual Metiers d’Art (MDA) collection as an ode to the extraordinary skills of the specialty ateliers owned by Chanel.

The collection made headlines around the world as Chanel was the first luxury house to stage a show in sub-Saharan Africa. The runway show itself was part of a thoughtful three-day cultural programme staged at Dakar’s iconic Palais de Justice building that spotlighted many local artists and creatives.

You’ll have read all about how this year’s MDA collection was first shown in Dakar – the capital city of Senegal, a country rich with traditional crafts and contemporary arts that’s found on the Westernmost tip of Africa. It was certainly a historic move, what with Chanel being the first European luxury house to do a major fashion show in sub-Saharan Africa.

Heavily inspired by the 1970s and its music genres such as disco, funk, soul and punk, hallmarks of the decade such as flared pants, bohemian vests and platform shoes were in rotation throughout the collection.

And as for the collection itself, the Metiers d’Art 2023 collection took inspiration from the 1970s and the social attitudes associated with the decade’s dominant music cultures, such as pop, punk, soul, funk and disco. This manifested in cool, swingy pantsuits that came with kicky flared pants, tactile, multi-coloured tweeds, bedazzled wide collars, playful platform sandals and delicate lace dresses, mirroring the explosive energy and liberation that characterised the decade.

The collection was subsequently re-staged in Tokyo earlier this month and now, it finally hits Chanel’s Singapore boutiques on June 22. Scroll on below for a closer look at the pieces you can add to cart.
