Singapore fashion designer Tan Yoong passed away last week at age 66.
He was found in his home by a family member on Tuesday, November 10, 2017. The Straits Times reports that according to Tan’s friends, he had fallen in his home and hit his head.
The Singapore fashion icon and pioneer was well-known for his extravagant bridal gowns and high fashion designs. The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts alumnus won first prize for haute couture in his very first fashion design competition, Japan’s Kanebo Grand Award, back when he was only 23 years old.
He also clinched first place in in 1978, and offered his styling skills to spreads in Her World and Her World Brides.
In 1983, Tan Yoong decided to open his own eponymous luxury boutique that grew to become immensely popular in Singapore among the fashion set. He went on to become a household name after the daughter of the late president Ong Teng Cheong wore one of his designs on her wedding day.
