Manolo Blahnik says reports he keeps an example of every shoe he’s designed at home are exaggerated – because the joints of his house are too weak. The famed footwear creator has been working in the industry for decades. He has made thousands of pairs of shoes and finds it hilarious that there are rumours he keeps hold of all of them.“Imagine! If I had 25,000 pairs of shoes the whole house would collapse. These 18th-century houses have very weak joints,” he giggled. The 69-year-old designer has started thinking about his age recently. He isn’t that worried about his advancing years as he sees so many other people in fashion working on and on.“In a year's time I'll be 70. And it makes me happy that Armani is 80 because I'm not going to be retiring!” he laughed to British newspaper The Telegraph.“I do and re-do things that I used to do in a flash, because I want to be more perfectionist about these things. Maybe it sounds pompous and pretentious, but that's the way I feel."One thing Manolo isn’t so happy about is the new crop of people who make fake designer goods. He was recently in Italy and he was astounded to see two Chinese women who were wearing shoes which looked very much like his, but had one big difference. The ladies apparently had no idea their footwear hadn’t been created by the designer.“[The shoes were] in a wonderful colour I had never seen before. So I asked, 'Where did you get your shoes?' 'Manolo Blahnik.' I said, 'No, my dear: these are not Manolo, these are plastic! With a horrid little plastic buckle,’” he recalled. © COVER MEDIA
