For many of us, Chinese New Year is a time of uninhabited feasting, especially during the reunion dinner with our extended family on the eve. A sumptuous feast is de rigueur because it symbolises abundance and good fortune for the rest of the year.

For the fashion-obsessed ladies, it’s always a challenge when it comes to occasions like these. Our stylish and on-point outfits tend to get in the way of our gastronomic delight! There’s no way you can concentrate when your new jumpsuit is causing some serious below-the-waist chafing.

We know it’s pointless to try to say ‘no’ to the selection of enticing festive goodies that make their appearance during the dinner, so we are here to offer you five easy tips so that you can enjoy your dinner in peace while still make a great stylish impression. You’re welcome in advance.

Tip #1: Opt for darker hues

While we understand that it’s the festive period and the consensus is usually to bust out your bright coloured clothing, it’s still a safer idea to go for darker hues. In your frenzied desire to chow down the cornucopias spread on the table, you might end up sharing this overflowing supply of delicacies with your blouse.

Darker hues are better equipped to camouflage the possible hazards of the reunion dinner trade; it can conceal stains and bulges that might appear after the dinner. How did that stain even get there, seriously?  If dark hues are frowned upon by your family, you can consider going for clothing that sport complicated patterns and prints to distract their vision.

Tip #2: Straight cut silhouettes are your best friends

We’d strongly recommend that you wear a loose fitting shift dress as opposed to a figure-skimming bodycon because ain’t nobody got time for that evil suction. Comfort and ease of movement are key to reunion dinners because you want to be able to eat in peace, without worrying about how to hide your post-meal tummy.

Tip #3: If you are wearing a bottom, make it a low waisted one

The last thing you want to do is to wear a high-waisted bottom that sits right across your tummy. That will compress your stomach area, leading to discomfort after the heavy meal. Hip-hugging jeans and skirts will be your best bet.

Tip #4: Cotton is always better

If you are not such a fan or loose fitting clothing, we’d recommend cotton jersey. Compared to their polyester and viscose counterparts, cotton will always be more comfortable. It has got more stretch and has the ability to expand as you go along the dinner.

Tip #5: You might want to consider an outerwear

Dining in colder atmospheres makes us eat more. So make sure you stay warm to stay in control! Opt for a figure trimming longline vest or cardigan to keep your body cosy and when you are done, button it up to conceal any potential bulges!

Bon appétit, ladies!
